Avenger with a reach weapon

There is also a problem I can see with Overwheling Strike, which, when used with a reach weapon, creates a paradox. The range of the weapon is "Melee Weapon" but the hit text is

1[W] + Wisdom modifier damage. You shift 1 square and slide the target 1 square into the space you occupied.

Which is impossible when attacking with reach. Strange that they did not just use the same wording that they did with footwork lure, since it's effectively the same power.

Yeah, I was relatively certain that was the case. I have in mind an elven avenger of Sehanine who uses a greatspear. I can still do this, I just won't be using the reach property of the spear often.

I know I could use a greatsword and get the same modifiers without spending a feat, but this character is a hunter not a swordsman. He is going to multiclass with ranger and go Horizon Walker for his paragon path.

I plan on him being highly mobile using stealth and a mix of ranged attacks via his bow and spear attacks to take down his prey.

On the upside, hiding behind a row of his minions won't necessarily protect your quarry ;)

Cleric/radiant servant with a radiant weapon! You get wis based large aoe nukes, some healing, an egregious amount of ongoing damage with your action points and an increased crit rate to boot!

Plus, cleric makes thematic sense as well.

Why not use some sort of Ranger/Rogue or Ranger/Cleric multiclass instead (and maybe Elf to Eladrin)? Melee Training with Dex for spear attacks, etc. would be mechanically superior and give you the flavor better. Avenger is Holy Assassin, not Hunter.

Actually a Pursuing Avenger with a bow isn't such a crazy notion. The character has a secondary DEX attribute. Overall the whole thing isn't that much different than the situation with a lazer cleric, except there are actually additional synergies. Not one of those combinations that you think of right off the bat, but with high wis he'll have all his normal Avenger goodies, and the high dex buffs those AND the bow.

His Oath power won't work with the bow attacks, but essentially the bow is like a freebie. As an elf he's got the weapon proficiency for longbow. Slap in an MC to Ranger and pick up Twin Strike and he can do a fair approximation of the "doesn't miss much" with it. Great Spear is not the ideal weapon for ANYONE, but he could always pick up a few of the polearm or spear feats and do pretty well with it.

Really doesn't seem any more improbable a build than lazer cleric would at first glance.

I admit this isn't an optimized character. I tend to play odd characters and still find ways for them to work. I do think I'm going to give up on the greatspear though and stick with a longspear.

Using rolled ability scores, this is what he looks like at 5th level:

Normally I don't like joining a game already in progress, but I haven't had a chance to play in years. I'm not sure what his 6th level feat will be, currently it is a toss up between; Improved Armor of Faith, Melee Training, and Skill Focus (Stealth).
