Avenger with Spiked Chain

Did you know that as an avenger you can take a feat to effectively make your weapon attacks against your oath of emnity a brutal 3? I found this very interesting with a spiked chain build. The build didn't depend on implements because it was a reach weapon. But I think that brutal 3 when you're rolling d4s just takes the fun out of it. Your thoughts?

Why use a Spiked chain?
Oath of Enmity said:
Effect: When you make a melee attack against the target and the target is the only enemy adjacent to you,
So, OoE doesn't work if you aren't adjacent, meaning you lose most of the benefit of spending a feat for the chain. You're better off just using a falchion and using the feat for something else.

And what is the name and wording of this feat that gives brutal 3? If it does also work on falchions, then that's clearly the way to go: you can put vorpal on a heavy blade. (Which would mean OMG INF1N1T3 D4M4G3!!!11!!)

The feat is Avenging Resolution. It doesn't give brutal 3, it just treats rolls of 1 or 2 as if it was a 3. It doesn't really have any interaction with vorpal at all.

If it's this one:

Avenging Resolution
Heroic Tier
Prerequisite: Avenger, oath of enmity power
Benefit: When you attack a target of your oath of enmity with a weapon attack, treat all rolls of a 1 or 2 on the damage dice as though the result were a 3 on the die.

You're out of luck.

Falchion/Spiked Chain would have an average damage of 2*(3+3+3+4)/4 = 6.5. This is the same as a 1d12 weapon. Since it's "treat as" instead of "reroll" you don't even get increased vorpal chance. Still, a 1.5 increase in damage isn't bad.

The feat in question is Avenging Resolution and it reads:

"When you attack a target of your otah of enmity with a weapon attack, treat all rolls of a 1 or a 2 on the damage dice as though the result were a 3 on the die."

Here's a level 4 version of a sample Elven Avenger with a Falchion instead of a spiked chain (Oath doesn't apply against non-adjacent targets, so reach isn't very useful for Avengers).

This particular build would have +11 vs AC, roll twice, 2d4(min 3 per d4)+8 damage.

DPR with Overwhelming Strike against an average level 4 enemy would be:

[sblock=DPR 15.11]Enemy: AC 17

+11 vs AC(+5 Wis, +2 Level + 3 Proficiency + 1 Enh)

Miss: .063
Hit: .839 x 6.5(2d4, min 3) + 5(Wis) + 2(Valenar feat) + 1(Enh) = 12.17
Crit: .098 x 6.5(high crit 2d4, min 3) + 4(+1 weapon 1d6, min 3) + 3.5(Executioner bracers 1d6) + 16(maximized hit) = 2.94
Total DPR: 15.11[/sblock]

This doesn't seem terribly better than using a Mordenkrad or an Executioner's Axe. Both are already brutal, which removes the need for Avenging Resolution, making it feat-neutral. They also have better dice to roll; I loathe d4s with the fury of a thousand exploding suns.

The primary reason, SFAICT, to use the spiked chain and Avenging Resolution combo is that you can get Two-Weapon Fighting and Two-Weapon Defense, *and* also take the various Light Blade feats, which are a bit easier to get into for avengers than are the appropriate axe and hammer feats.

Of course, that it could look cool would also be a valid reason. :)

Edit: Oooo, the falchion qualifies for the Carnage property, which should kick off very often with Avenging Resolution.
