How are the average hit points for a monster calculated? I can't seem to figure out the system..

Well, the average roll on a d8, for example, is 4.5. So if something has 5d8 hit dice, that's an average of 22.5 hit points... rounded down to 22.

If it has a 14 Con, then that will be 5d8 + 10, or 22 + 10, or 32.

FYI: the average roll for any die is half the size of the die plus 0.5.

d10 = 5.5
d6 = 3.5

(1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 + 9 + 10) / 10 = 5.5
(1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6) / 6 = 3.5

FYI: the average roll for any die is half the size of the die plus 0.5.

And here I thought it was the highest number plus the lowest number divided with two.

No, it's the sum of the number on each face times the probability of that face occurring!

Both statements are good mnemonics for non-mathematical types to remember the average score of a die. I put in the actual math for interest's sake.
