Averial rework ideas

The Averial race has a hefty +3 LA cost. Can anyone suggest a build that brings that down to a +1 LA? Or a +1 LA race from another source that has true flight at 1st level?

Maybe add in a claustrophobia racial penalty. Can't be in enclosed spaces sort of a thing...

Try a different approach to the flight...

at 1st level, they can glide short distance only. Maybe a jump bonus
at 3rd level, they can fly for a certain number of rounds before suffering fatigue effects
at 5th level, increase the flight duration to turns
at 7th level, add increased carry capacity (to allow for medium armors)
at 9th level, make it unlimited as a standard flight ability

the idea is to make the flight ability to scale with what other characters might be able to achieve with other options (such as magic... levitation, feather fall, etc.) with full ability achieved roughly at the point in which the ability becomes rather bland or standard to a number of characters (such as magical items, flight spell, etc).

In this case, I wouldn't place much of a LA penalty on such a designed race (maybe only +1 depending on other abilities).

EDIT: and then, there is that race out of the Races of the Wild that flies, but I cannot recall the name.
 


You could do something like...

Magic Elf Wings [Racial]
Prerequisite: Elf, Wisdom 13+
Benefit: You can manifest a connection to the Plane of Elemental Air in the form of a pair of feathered wings. Doing so is an Immediate action. You may use these wings to reduce the damage of a fall (as the feather fall spell), or to give yourself a +4 bonus on a Jump check. This is a Supernatural ability.

You may not manifest wings if you are wearing normal armor; however, you may buy or modify Light armor to suit your winged form for +150 gp.


Magic Flying Elf PrC
Prerequisites: Elf, Magic Elf Wings
Benefits:
- HD: d6
- BAB: Poor
- Good Save: Reflex
- Skills: 4 + Int -- Ranger skill list, plus Kn (religion, arcana, history) and Spellcraft.

Special[/b]:
1: Sky Eyes, Glide
2: +1 spellcasting level, Air Mastery
3: Air Magic, +2 Wisdom
4: +1 spellcasting level, Flight

Sky Eyes (Ex): +4 Racial bonus on Spot checks; overlaps with Elf bonus.

Glide (Ex): You may manifest your magical elf wings as an (Ex) ability, despite the fact that they are very obviously magical elf wings. You may also glide while falling, choosing to move 5 ft. horizontally for every 10 ft. you descend.

Air Mastery (Ex): +1 to attack and damage rolls against airborne foes.

Air Magic (Su/Sp): You gain one of the following benefits: free Extended [Air] spells, free access to the Air domain, or energy resistance 10 vs. Electricity.

Flight (Ex): You gain a Fly speed equal to your land speed +10 ft.

I've decided to scrap the idea of using Averials. I'm playing with a campaign idea that includes skyships and clouds with cities on them. I've decided to go with Raptorans, the Hadozee and a custom elven race that has links with the Elemental Plane of Air. Still working that out.
