AvX: Which side are you on.... but why?!?

Marvel's answer to DC's "New 52" is Avengers versus X-men. It will run all summer.

This is the storyline-

Phoenix is coming back to earth. last time she was around, she consumed a sun of an alien planet killing billions (makes galactus look like he's on a diet).

It is strongly suggested she is coming back to possess "Hope" the first new mutant since House of M which created a reality roadblock for the creation of mutants.

The X-men think if Pheonix is "reborn" (united with Hope) Mutants can be created again thus save their race.

The Avengers see Pheonix as a world killer so she needs to be stopped- IMMEDIATELY.

Thus Avengers versus X-men with some being caught in the middle (Beast, Wolverine, Storm, Scarlet witch and Quicksilver)

So who wins and second..... why are ALL the mutants deciding earth can be destroyed? Logic says some would agree that mutantdom can die out to save the entire planet.

I'm Gold Side X-Men because they are the true X-men and now a bunch of traitors to Xavier's ideal (although they like Blue side X-Men missed the entire point that dealt with integration into human society).

That said, the funny thing about the X-Men schism is that people ignore that it was in part about compulsary military service based on race and regardless of age.

Thing is only Blue Sider Cult believe the Phoenix can restore mutantdom. Since hope returned mutants have been appearing, but they are "broken" and defective. Cyclops thinks that the pheonix returning can fix everything (even though this hasn't even been mentioned until THE PREVIEW of AvX). Let's over look that even in Child's Crusade Cyclops only wanted to kill Wanda instead of asking her to undo her spell (unlike X-Factor).

Wolverine told Hope to her face that if she goes pheonix he will kill her to prevent the pheonix from casting judgement on the earth. After all with Apocalypse reborn at JGsHL Wolverine can risk having two people with the potential of being genocidal killers be in the protection of the X-men...

Well 4 if you also count Magneto and ArcAngel... er 6 if you count Beast and Jean Grey. Yeah.. the X-men are screwed.

To be fair, she only killed one world of billions. Galactus has consumed hundreds of worlds comprising billions each. Sure, Phoenix had more power than Galactus, but she didn't kill nearly as many people (and at least she got them fried as a by product rather than consumed their energy too).

As to the main question - I don't have an opinion :)

I don't get this. I know this thing has been a cornerstone of all the mutant books and stories, but really, mutants are not a race. In the Marvel Universe, mutation has caused massive death and destruction. The only real "good" that the "good" mutants, (X-Men, et al), have ever done is basically stop or capture or clean up after all that the "evil" mutants have done. Hell, this whole situation with no more new mutants was caused by a freakin' MUTANT.

Looking at all the various mutant books and stories, a world without super mutations, (not without the *people* who mutated), would be a vastly safer and more peaceful world. If the "good" mutants really cared about world safety and peace, you'd think they'd be happy to give up all super mutations.

I hope the Avengers win, because the X-Men's stance is just friggin' dumb. Or they're deluded. Or they're not actually "good."

* Note: Though I know the history of Marvel comics from years of collecting and reading them, but I know nothing about this current AvX thing other than what's in this thread.

Bullgrit. Let me just say, if anyone haven't been reading X-Men during the last several years would be lost. SERIOUSLY LOST because how different they are from the 1990s X-Men.

I think much of the problem with the X-Men/Mutants come about because of the changes that happened in Cyclops' characterization, and the modus operandi of the group which changed from assimilation to being along the lines mutant separatism and supremacy (especially the mutants on Utopia) due to having gone through several years functioning with a survival at all costs type of mentality. IT doesn't help that mutants tend to be very selfish to the point of wanting to deal with their own issues to the point of hating when the Avengers try to deal with them BUT complain when the Avengers decide to do thinging.

If anything, I want Cyclops to be humiliated and Wolverine to return to the Xavier ideal of assimilation with humanity. I also hope that this event ends the yearly/half year event treadmill.

For those who do not know the X-Men's pov here is a quick synopsis of the last 12 years (in real time) of X-Men history.

The population of mutants grew to several million. Genosha's population WAS 16 million, that was, before it was wiped out of existence by several 100 story tall sentinels. This became a point of contention between the X-Men and the Avengers since "the avenger's should have done something and it's not fair that the X-Men are the only people who deal with mutants!" Or course, the X-Men basically said "BACK OFF MUTANT ISSUES" to the Avengers before and well, several months prior to it's vaporization Genosha tried to nuke the entire world.

Cyclops then cheated on Jean Grey with Emma Frost. Xavier went on tv and said "I'm a mutant and my school, Xavier's School for Higher Learning is a school for mutants". Humans are discovered to have an extinction gene which will cause humanity to go extinct in 3 generations. Kid Omega started a riot happened at Xavier's. He died then someone who might have been Magneto marched 10,000 New Yorkers into crematoriums then killed Jean Grey before being killed by Wolverine.

Years from now Beast becomes the head master of Xavier's and then goes insane because he, like [the person who might be Magneto], snorted sentient bacteria. In this future the X-Men opperate from an island fortress known as Xavieria. Humanity is going extinct as is mutants due to the extinction gene and roach people control Africa. Don't worry, this future never will happen because Jean gave Cyclops permission to bang Emma Frost, so all is well.

Emma Frost reopened the Xavier's school then more stuff happened.

The scarlet witch then went crazy, killed a bunch of Avengers, the Avengers and X-Men decided to euthanize which lead to her changing reality. Stuff happened then she said "No more Mutants." All went white. When everyone woke up mutantdom was reduced to 300 people. The X-Gene and the extinction gene both vanished. No mutant OR human could give birth to a mutants and no humans could turn into mutant. This was known as both the Decimation and M-Day.

Mutants were rounded up an forced to live at a concentration camp built on the grounds of Xavier's. They were then placed under the watch of sentinels (who were piloted by a branch of DHLS called O*N*E). A bus of former mutants WERE BLOWN UP killing 60 students who were kicked out of Xavier's for not being mutants the group of christian anti-mutant terrorists who were responsible attacked Xaviers. This becomes a MAJOR point of contention between the X-Men and the US government/Avengers for the obvious reasons.

More stuff happened, like "Super Hero Registration Act" being passed and the resulting "Civil War", which further drive a wedge between the X-Men and Avengers. Again for obvious reasons.

Then everything changed. Hope, the first post Decimation mutant was born, chaos ensued, lots of people died, the school was destroyed and Xavier was shot in the head by Bishop before then Cable took Hope into the future. Cyclops formed an assassination squad, X-Force, and ordered them to kill the enemies of mutantdom.

Stuff happened, like Xavier getting better.

The X-Men eventually moved to San Francisco (like two weeks to a month after hope was born). While there, Obama was elected president, the Skrulls invaded, then Obama appointed Norman Osborn to the position of CZAR of Superheroes. An anti-mutant riot started in San Francisco, many X-Men got involved (in the riot) then "Osborn's Avengers" attacked the X-men. The X-Men then left San Francisco and moved to a fortress known as Utopia (which is actually asteroid M). They then declare it a "mutant only" sovereign nation.

Did I mention forget to mention that Cyclops has taken a militant mutant supremist stance and he now considers EVERY MUTANT an X-Man? Did I also mention that he absorbed part of the Void?

MUTANT ZOMBIES ATTACK UTOPIA. Asgard was under SIEGE! Hope and Cable returned (all within two weeks time) and more chaos ensued including X-Force being outed and Nightcrawler getting killed and a force field being erected around San Francisco while the Avengers stood around AND DID NOTHING. Hope saved the day, Cyclops started to believe that the X-Men were more powerful then the Avengers, then during the next vampires attacked utopia and made Jubilee a vampire! Then there was a war with a Chaos God...

In the aftermath, mutants start to reappear... but they are broken and need hope to "fix" them. Legion devowered Cthulhu and created an alternate reality then Wolverine reformed X-Force so he can hunt Apocalypse.

Eventually X-Force found Apocalypse, who was about 10 years old, killed him, and was cloned by one of the members of X-Force in secret. Arc-Angel ascended and became the new Apocalypse. The Serpent arrived with the Worthy. Cyclops threatens the mayor of San Francisco. The Serpent and the Worthy are defeated. Everyone had a breather for half a day.

Unknown to everyone, Wolverine was battling a Ninja Clan for during a month since Hope returned. He discovered that the badguys he slaughtered were his own adult children (who were raised as soldiers for the Ninja clan). This caused him to have a mental break with reality. When he returned to Utopia, he immediately left with Cyclops to a UN conference. Chaos ensued as a result of Kid Omega trolling the UN. Sentinels are unleashed everywhere and Cyclops orders the X-Men to invade every country with a sentinel and destroy it proactively. A mutant tolerance museum opens, is attacked, then blows up after the Idie (a 14 year old extremist christian mutant who thinks herself to be a monster) murders a bunch of people (in self defense). The wreckage then turned into a Giant sentinel and attacked Utopia as Wolverine and Cyclops got into a fist fight (over abandoning Utopia, and the X-children fighting sentinels).

After the sentinel was destroyed, Wolverine had a word with the Idie who tells him she's alright with killing people because she's going to hell anyway (since she's a monster) and that being an X-Man means you have to kill indiscriminately without remorse because that's what Wolverine does (and it ain't pretty). He left in disgust, watched Kony 2012 (not really) then went to talk to Cyclops. Cyclops told Wolverine to "kneel" which prompted him to quit the X-Men because "The X-Men lost sight of who they were because they are raising child soldiers, which isn't cool, and Cyclops is acting like Magneto."*

Wolverine headed back to Westchester and built the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning with Kitty Pryde as his Co-Headmistress and Beast as his vice principal (oh oh!). Half the students and X-Men leave Utopia, and on JGSHL's opening day the school is attacked.

Arc-Angel-Pocalypse nuked some town in Montana so he can create "Tabula Rosa" which is a time-acceleration region meant to be a trial run for his "New Earth." Child Apocalypse's clone, Genesis, was then freed from his birthing tube so he could attack Arc-Angel. Arc-Angel was killed by X-Force, then was reborn. New X-Force was then revealed to Beast and Kitty Pryde and Iceman and then both Angel and Genesis were enrolled in Jean Grey's School for Higher Learning and the school is attacked the next week by some Alien Zoologist with brood.**

Meanwhile Cyclops released his manifesto for Mutant world Domination. Mr Sinister turned a bunch of people in San Fransciso into Mr and Ms Sinisters... they are then all KILLED by Cyclop's Extinction Team, Celestials arrive on earth then leave then Extinction team investigated Tabula Rosa.

DHLS then built a dome over Tabula Rosa... and we now find ourselves waiting for AvX.

* Ironically one of the issues in X-Schism was how Cyclops started treating every mutant as an expendable soldiers... even "the children" while maintaining a cult like fanatic belief that Hope was the messiah and she came to save mutantdom.
** 1 year and 2 months passed from Hope being born to Tabula Rosa's creation/Arc-Angel's death. Extinction Team investigated Tabula Rosa about a day and a half after it was created.

Trust me, part of the reason it seems like a lot happened during the last 10 years was because there have been an average of 4-6 X-Men books produced each month. Sadly this of was bumped up to 8 - 12 during the last year as a result of double shipping (because the nu DCu has been kicking major butt.

The Avenger's side will be equally confusing and would contain dozens of Avenger Groups running around fighting each other.

Some of the listed battles seem.... unbalanced. That said, I hear many of the X-men's powers have risen.

Iceman vs Red Hulk is a joke but now I hear Iceman's power levels are on uncharted levels. Impressive considering he absorbed the Chest of Winters back in the Simonson X-Factor days......

Most of the time, as I lose interest in a series (comics, movies, TV, etc), it's a general waning of interest followed by a cutoff where I decide the time input isn't worth it any more. It's relatively rare that I can pinpoint the exact point in the story where I stopped caring about the plot. This is it, right here. Once a series decides they are going to literally throw out all history and stop playing by any set of rules, I simply have no desire to follow it any more.

Relique, please note that this is directed at the series, not at you. Like Bullgrit, I also stopped following X-men in the 90's, and thought I might be interested in this new plotline. The summary you posted, however, has been immensely helpful. I am extremely grateful to have learned about this early on, before I invested anything in the new series.
