Awarding XP for non-game actions

shadowlight

First Post
So I've DM'd one or two games where I gave out bonus XP (like 10) for non-game actions of the players (like if someone was being cool and brought Dew, or was the only one to laugh at a joke:)).

Has anyone else done this and did the players like it or hate it?

Ya, I've done this before. Excxept I used a hero point system that suplimented XP. So, I'd just hand out hero points for people doing whatever. It was a nice little reward system.

I've done it, but not for a long time. Not opposed to it, just haven't done it. I used to give a 5% XP bonus to all PCs whos players showed up on time, which had the desired effect and now I don't have to anymore :) But I'd do it again.

Ultimately, I think it should be to encourage some behavior (like chipping in for pizza...)

Ive done it for years, but always in moderation and not consistantly, otherwise they begin to expect it and take it for granted.
It makes me out as less of a bastard GM that way :D

I do it, but in an old group I had a guy complain about it. He didn't have a lot of cash and he felt like the wealtheir players were buying their levels. However, on a similar thread several months ago, someone pointed out that popcorn is a tasty snack and is cheap.

Just my own experience.

This was the topic of the editorial in the latest Knights of the Dinner Table issue. Jolly gave XP to get a guy to show up for a game.

We get bonus xp for bringing tasty treats, making the whole table laugh, and writing up journal entries of the previous session.

I used to subtract points for disruptive behavior, since we were a very disruptive bunch, to keep on track. Also, i used to quiz players on past events (since they were bad at remembering stuff) and then if they got it right they would get xp extra to, though that is kind of game related.
