Azathoth took Toughness?

So, Swack-Iron, in other words, you don't like it 'cause its d20. I have played CoC for years (and delta green), but think the two versions will be very similar. Your reasoning is flawed, you don't like it because it has stats for the elder gods etc and has been pointed out that all CoC books have had these stats. Maybe you shouldn't comment if you are using such a lame argument (honestly, no offense).

And there's something viscerally *precise* about a d20 stat block. It's so... exacting. Seeing a critter/god/character/whatever in that ultra-standardized format... to me it just doesn't seem to be a good fit for the Mythos setting.

"Viscerally *precise*" eh? Hmmmm....

I'd much rather see rules presented in a format that is usable and accurate in a game than something vague for the sake of being atmospheric. I reserve atmosphere and uncertainty for my descriptions and the adventures, not for the stat blocks and rules. There I want precision and accuracy.

Standardized formats exist to reduce confusion and facilitate precise communication. These are good things in my book. (Of course, my freshman students disagree. They're all for vague presentation, especially on their Works Cited pages! )

I don't know, in my opinion CoC is all about setting and not statistics, so stat-block no stat-block, Wizards will never top the quality of Chaosium's adventures (although I supose they aren't doing adventures, just the source book... and since Chaosium is supposed to be publishing d20 adventures and supplements, it might all just rock).

I'm excited, it's one of the few WotC products I'm really looking forward to.

Swack-Iron - While it's perfectly valid to dislike d20, I also want to point out that Chaosium's stat blocks are just as detailed as any d20 stat block. So, if you dislike stat blocks, and apparently have ignored them with Chaosium, then you could do the same with the d20 version, and at least look at it. Chaosium is heavily involved with it, anyway.

The sad part is, Elminster can still take him...

Are you reading the same character descriptions I am?

From the FRCS, Elminster is a level 25 wizard, with only the spell penetration feat. He can NOT beat Azathoth's SR of 52.

Conversely, Azathoth has a base DC of 62 or so for all his spells. He can cast a 9th level death spell with his alter reality power as a standard action. Elminster's best save is fort or will save at +17.

I don't see many casters getting past that SR and assuming you nail it with a harm spell, Azathoth will absolutely kill just about anything it wants to.

They forgot one major aspect of Azathoth in that stat block, if they were intending to convert it over from CoC.

Every round that Azathoth stays manifested in the physical world, you have to roll a d6. 1-5: Azathoth doubles in size and reach. 6: It returns to the center of the universe.

Also, if you do enough damage to it, rather than dying, it simply returns to the center of the universe.

Summoning Azathoth is the equivalent of dropping an A-Bomb. You can't stop it. You can't kill it. The best you can do is attempt to run away and hope it goes home.
