BAB to Skill based?

Not so much. I don't see how a random amount of skill points is going to be more beneficial than a set number plus int mod.

Right, sorry, I should ahev kept my personal taste out of it, my bad. Won;t hapen again :p

No that not a personal taste thing if you have a reason outside of just taste,

And like I said before, you could have it set to average like the system you said you uesed for hit points, the idea is the same

I used a skill based attack system last time i played a D20 game. I used the following skills.
Slashing- small medium and large
Bludgeoning- small medium and large
Piercing- small medium and large.
Dodging-

I did just have it the 3 base types but i couldnt reconcile using a greatsword being the same skills as a pocket knife, or a spear as the same skill as a dagger.

I added a defense statistic to each weapon though that went from normal which was equal defense to +- 2,4. I allways figured that its easier to block with a arming sword then with a sledgehammer or knife so i added a stat to reflect that. It gave some more thought to picking a weapon but not much more complexity.

Shields also added an automatic bonus to parry, and armor was DR. The players liked it pretty well. We had to adjust a little because it was too lethal to start. I had an idea similar to yours where rolling higher did more damage, but then our 4th level ranger happened to roll a 1 againt an orc who rolled a 19 and got wasted in one hit. So we moved it down to 1 bonus pt per 2 pts you beat the defender by. There was still the feel of opposed combat and good hits doing more, but it was less likely to deal an unlucky shot that crippled a PC in one blow.

You play d20 Doctor Who?, (or do you mean the fasa version, or Time lord?)

I mean the "write your own" version. I'm still tinkering, and it hasn't had a full playtest yet. What I decided to do was remove everything that didn't lead to fast play.....I'm going for one "episode" per play session. ;)

I've got an idea but it means rebuilding the skill system from scratch,

In the end, that's what I had to do. In my system the Combat skill is applied in full to the Offence roll, but only half ranks are applied to Defence DC. I had to give the warrior (the universal tank type in my system) a +1 bonus to Offense and damage rolls at every odd level, in order to separate them from other classes that have Combat as a class skill, and to give them enough damage potential (due to low-magic world).

Totally agree,

I had the same idea for shields (but as you roll for weapon, was thinking of giving each type of shield a dice roll instead, say something like 1d4 for small, 1d6 for medium etc)

yeah combat with this could be very lethal, but that why you get to add your full weapon skill to defence, to offset that threat

You know the word is there is going to be an official game, (but not d20)

so they say........

Who said I was okay with a sorcerer having more hp than the fighter?

that was just an example,
I don't hear you complain about the fact that a sorcerer can roll higher hit points than a Fighter, yet you complain about my idea for the skill points and it's the same thing
