Babies as body shields...

Carnifex

First Post
Heheh, I do believe I'm turning into a RBDM. One of the parties in my game is currently pitted against a coven of werewolves in a village, and I've been pulling a great deal of evil tricks on them (all of which will be detailed in one big 'Day of the Werewolves' update to my story hout).

Anyway, I managed to get a Piratecat-inspired babies-as-body-shields tactic in there. The first wave of lesser werewolves was slaughtered wholesale by the defenders, but now a band of tougher ones, with their leader, have utilised this tactic.

I'll be interested to see how it pans out, because in PC's story hour, I think the Defenders of Daybreak decide that they wont let the foe use babies like this; if necessary they'll raise the babies later. Thing is, for a low-level group of adventurers, like my lot, this option just isn't available, plus the fact that raising is much more difficult IMC.

Who else has made use of the baby-shield tactic, and what results did you get from it? What tactics did those pesky players come up with to overcome it? Have you ever had a situation where the PC's just plain screwed up and many babies die?

Thanks Horacio!

However, this thread actually isn't a hidden marketing scheme ;) especially since I have to wait until the current battle is over before I can write up the day of the werewolves and post it on the story hour. I am genuinely interested in other peoples experiences with baby-shields, mainly so I can be prepared for whatever my PC's throw at me ;)

A baby shield provides one-half cover (+4 cover bonus to AC, +2 cover bonus to Reflex saves) against one-half of the battlefield. Shifting the direction in which the shield provides cover is a move-equivalent action. You can make a shield bash attack with a baby shield; this deals 1d6 points of damage (x2 crit). You can make up to 4 shield bashes before the baby shield becomes too soft and floppy to use.

Somedays it does not pay to read some threads.

It all comes down to if the players think the badies are going to die no matter what they do. This could be based on them seeing this trick before. Which means this is an alignment issue.:) It is a no win. If they attack they are seen as baby killers (even if they bring them back) and if they don't they are seen as 'not saving my baby'.

What it is a defineing moment. What ever they do it will haunt them for some time. So, you are Bob the Ranger, I heard about a Ranger Bob that killed some babies some time ago, you him?

How can a baby provide 1/2 cover? They're WAY smaller than tower shields. They're smaller than regular small shields, but if they provide cover it would have to be like 1/8 or something small like that...
