Babylon 5

Hold on to your cash for a little while longer ... the 2nd edition is in the works and won't be backwards compatible with (or at least, there's no conversion to) the current edition.

The current edition is D20 System and requires a WOTC PHB. The new system will be OGL and will be standalone.

Hope this helps.

I'm not entirely sure thats accurate ddougan, not the part about it being OGL, but the part about it not being backwards compatible.. Bare in mind 2e isnt written yet, well not entirely anyway and the parts I have seen are certainly not "alien" enough to make it unusable with the existing version, some changes and refinements sure, but not a reinvention of the wheel by any means.. but as I say the whole book isnt written yet and is still very much in development...so whether or not that changes, remains to be seen.

Im afraid I cant go into detail due to my NDA, but I havent seen anything yet that would make me think the 1st ed material in existence is all for the recycling bin once 2e is released in any regard.

Yes, you see, this is how rumours start.

There is a second edition in development, it won't be around for many months yet and -shock, horror - it will _not_ invalidate _any_ supplement that has been printed. None of them.

We just don't do that to our customers. . .

Time to dump the existing books then. Good thing I hadn't invested heavily into the game (only 5 or 6 books total).

LOL - I hope that was sarcasm :)

I have the complete range of B5 RPG material released to date, and I intend to purchase the 2nd edition when it comes out (at least, the core rule book - I'll see what follows in terms of overlap).

My point was that - *if* I didn't already own all this material, I would certainly wait until 2nd edition came out before I decided what 1st edition purchases I would make. We haven't seen the 2nd edition stuff, we don't know if the core rule book will simply be the 1st edition B5 RPG + Fact Book with additional OGL material (e.g. full character generation), or if it will overlap with other material.

(e.g. Anyone buying 2nd edition Midnight also got all the content from the "Against the Shadow" 1st edition source book too).

Matt, Neo,

I never suggested that the 2nd edition was going to invalidate the current books.

I simply suggested that the guy wait and see what 2nd edition will bring before committing his cash. I bet it DOES replace the current 1st edition core rule book (which is most likely going to be his primary purchase).

If I didn't already own the entire B5 RPG book range (including 2 copies of NSNR cos I foolishly pre-ordered it and forgot about it then ordered it from another location as soon as it was released...) it would be *my* preference to wait until the 2nd edition game out before committing to buying any first edition book. And the guy asked for opinions...

I haven't seen anything on this...Where did you learn this? Any idea when it will come out?

For those who have played how have you gone about it? Do you follow closely to the series plot, do your characters replace the main people or do you create your own stories not tied to the B5 plotline? The reason I ask is that I have a hard time seeing the game emulate the series in anyway if you don't follow the plot or exchange the actions of the major characters with the actions of the PC's and vice versa if they do then you could potentially suffer from Dragonlance syndrome with people reading the books (or in this case watching the series) and not deviating from what happened. What have you done?

Visit the Mongoose B5 forums for more info on 2nd edition ...

My own campaign I started during the Dilgar War, with players being fresh recruits into Earth Force. They played through that, the Earth/Minbari War and are now senior figures in the background of the series. I originally used the old Agents of Gaming B5 Wars for the fleet action, but bought Call To Arms from Mongoose midway through the campaign. Honestly haven't used it, but did pick up the 3 supplements (and since you're reading this Matt, any word on a PDF of the supplement counters so I don't have to cut up my book :) ). There is a revised edition of A Call To Arms out this month from Mongoose, so if you intend buying this boxed set, make sure you picked up the revised edition instead unless you are getting a really good deal on the original.

I think you're correct in that you don't want to interfere with the main plot - the problem is that players want to be involved in the major events in B5, but you don't want them messing up the "history" unless you're prepared to deal with massive change in your campaign material. But you can keep the main plot's integrity whilst using it as plot hooks. You can even appear to jeopardise the main plot and have the players bring it back on track if you are confident enough to fix what they may break...

But there are many areas where the series never really went (some of these where picked up by novels to some degree - e.g. Long Night of Centauri Prime, or the Psi Corps triliogy) where your imagination can run free and you can play out the Psi Wars etc

There are also many areas where the series only touched on events taking place elsewhere - your players could be Rangers taking orders from the League etc, or an search and rescue team out looking for the Icarus crew.

You can also simply ditch the main plot and use it as a background. Perhaps your players are regular Earth Force, who suddenly have tough decisions to make when evidence leaks out about Clarke's behaviour. Or perhaps you are an expedition team out near the Rim.

It shouldn't be hard to use the B5 universe as an interesting background still full of surprises, whilst keeping the main characters and storyline safe - gamers have been facing these problems with Star Wars, LOTR etc for years.

You can try http://www.wargamingonline.com - a little sparse right now, but we have one set of counters up already.

Sorry Matt, just to clarify ...

I already own the 3 supplements to ACTA, I was looking for a free PDF of the back covers of each so I didn't have to cut up the books (as opposed to having to pay for each of them again in electronic format!)

You'll understand if I treat that statement with a bit of skepticism since nearly every other company who has done a 2nd edition treatment of a product has said that and then produced a product that completely invalidated almost all previous books. Want examples? Just look at Spycraft 2.0, Mutants & Masterminds 2.0, Midnight 2.0 (although that one wasn't near as bad), and the granddaddy of them all, 3.5 edition.

I'm going to take a wait-and-see approach and judge for myself when the book is released. Until then, all B5 purchases are on hold for me.

Can you be a little more specific regarding "many months'? :) I have actually already gone out and bought the Core book and the season companions are on their way. I do not actually plan to run a campaign until next year and would pick up the new version if it was released before that.

Any hints as to what changes are in the new edition (I realize it still is in development but there must be some ideas...)?

One of the things I've read and liked was the acceleration and deceleration (sp?) rules for vehicles. Do others find this of great use?

Finally, if you are looking for playtesters I would be more than willing to lend a hand in this. Although I am new to Babylon 5 I have played D&D regularly since the red box set circa 1982 so I am definately an experienced DM and would be interested in helping to flesh out the rules....
