I personally don't get the back to the dungeon philosophy at all. For me it's all about telling group created and group driven story. It's all about the roles we play.
But I play in a DnD group that is largely dungeon crawlers, and they seem to enjoy it imensely. There's just enough roleplay in there to keep me from going mad, and they're a super group of people so I stick it out with them.
While I don't get it, and don't see the point -apparently somebody out there does, because it seems to work commercially. And a part of that somebody includes the people I play the game with.
My Mutants and Masterminds group is different... they're stuck with me as GM; so they get role-intensive as a matter of course.
But they seem to enjoy it - they keep coming back week after week.
