My wife and I were very excited about next week: Tuesday (17th) is our first wedding anniversary, which is a moment to celebrate. Then, a few days later, we were planning on going to GenCon for the whole weekend.
But then I had to take her to the hospital today.
Now this doesn’t necessarily mean the end of all that. This is a fairly common occurrence in her life: she has sickle cell anemia and has to go to the hospital sometimes for a week or so. It’s just that sometimes it happens at the most godawful of times.
Now, I don’t have a problem with taking a nice dinner to her up in the hospital and sharing that on Tuesday if she’s not out yet. Sure, not the most romantic of settings, but at least we’ll be together on the first anniversary of our wedding (and the second anniversary of the day I proposed to her).
But if she doesn’t get out within a week, that may spell disaster for our long-awaited GenCon trip. She tells me to go on without her, but what fun would I have on my own? Last year was a blast, and having her with me (willingly and without coercion, hehe) made it the best time I’d ever had at a Con. If she’s still hospitalized on Thursday, I’ll have to rethink whether or not I will go without her.
I guess the reason I’m letting people know is to keep her in your prayers, send her good thoughts, well-wishes for a speedy recovery, and such. (Please do me a favor; if you do see her at the Con, don’t mention this – she is very self-conscious about her condition. “Glad to see you could make it” would be about as far as I’d go.)
