BADC: Bothered About Disposable Charisma, Where Can I Find More Info?

I don't know about the group, but I agree with them.

What is a hero if he's not charismatic? Why would you employ an uncharismatic man to clear out the local monsters?

I think that there should be a house rule that someone in the group should have a high Cha, just to be the parties face.

I think the whole "put an 8 in cha it doesnt matter anyway" syndrome sucks. But its a goddang epidemic. I have heard tales of gaming groups where this did not happen, but I have never encountered a group that did not have at least one member who had this terrible disease.

Personally, if people started dumping CHA in my games, I'd have characters with charisma below a certain mark turned away at the city gates and politely informed that they smell like a gully dwarf, and their face is that of a hobgoblin, and local laws prohibit someone so ugly to walk around in public(Of course, these laws aren't enforced in dwarven and orc lands.)

Fascinatingly, hobgoblins have Cha 10.

Hong "not pretty enough to be a hobgoblin" Ooi

Why is it all these snooty elves and grubby bearded dwarves have to look down on the noble hobgoblin?

When the Legions of the Divine Emperor Hagrumlak the Ironhanded are crushing your tree houses and cleaning out your tunnels, who will you cry to then?

Moradin?

Bwahahaha. Please.

There is nothing wrong with heroes with low charisma.

Heroes with low charisma are tricked into clearing the local dungeon while the charismatic is pleaded to by the locals.

Heroes with low charisma are pawns in political affairs. Heroes with high charisma are wooed by the various factions.

Basically there are many repercussions to having a low charisma. They are just not reasons that often affect the dice. They are reasons the DM has to do himself.

I think people are overreacting to the whole "CHA 8" issue. It's only marginally below average, after all. I'm sure a lot of fine adventurers have a low CHA stat.

Turning away people at the gates. Maybe if they were CHA 5 or worse. And only maybe, even then.

If you want to remind your players why CHA can be important, there are easier, and more sensible, ways to do it. D&D has skills like Bluff, Diplomacy and Gather Information for a reason. Use them.

Your PCs want to put some bounty hunters off the scent? Bluff check. They want more gold for their latest quest? Diplomacy check. They want to find out some information about the old mines? Gather Information check. It won't be long before there is at least one "face man" in the group.

CHA is only a dump stat if the DM lets it be one. If STR is ten times more important in the game than CHA, then STR gets the high stat. If a DM wants some high CHA PCs, he needs to give them the chance to shine.

Oh, and hong's CHA-based feats? Very cool.
