BADD would be proud of my last session. I held the TPK hammer up, and...

In my campaign, last session a certain dragon was unleashed on the group. This was a dragon I've posted nervous "help me DM this thing" threads about before, and this time, I think I played the dragon too well. The players got rocked, and if not for a certain long-planned plot bomb being dropped, the dragon would have had no choice but to TPK these punks. The point is that I was in full control of my dragon, and I drove it like it was stolen. Rock on, me.

Wow, Doc, that sounds like a great game! I sure would love to read about it, but you're probably too busy to tell me all the details and display the drama in the many dialogue, plot twists, and characterization. Sigh. I'm going to go open my veins in the bathtub now.
Ho-o-old on, there, Jimmy, because YOU CAN read this fantastic session IN its ENTIRETY in my STORY HOUR!

Wow! That sounds fun! I love it when a dm's pet monster almost kills us, then doesn't at the last second because his pet npc gets to save us! Wooo!

Never liked Deus Ex Machina.
This isn't deus ex machina. That particular plot bubble's been rising for a long time, and it happened to be a convenient time to pop it.

Pet PC, thank you very much.

Pet PC, thank you very much.
The only differences between a pet NPC and a (DM-controlled *) pet PC are:

1: The pet NPC can at least justify it's existance... Both are poor constructions however.
2: Semantics, the Pet PC is just an NPC from a munchkin DM trying to pretend to be otherwise, but in truth; it looks even worse as it carries even more favoritism than a 'pet-NPC'.

As soon as any DM claims an NPC in the party as -their special character- you have problems.

*A player controlled 'pet-PC' is of course even worse, as it's favoritism.

Wow Doc, looks like you're being bashed by folks who are possibly clueless about what really happened. Darned shame, since the session I read in your story hour sounded like an awesome event.

Looks like sarcasm is RIGHT OUT.

So, stated here in no uncertain terms: The PC in question is not a pet PC. He's a PC with a lot of background he doesn't know about, and some was revealed BY the dragon that the dragon knew would hurt more than its icy breath ever could... so it left them to it, because it was the crueler thing to do.

And there we have it. Sarcasm back on: That was fun.
