Balancing a long combat

I'm wanting to run a long combat as descibed in the DMG2 as the final encounter in the current campaign. It'll involve an Aspect of Tiamat, a ninja that has caused the PCs fits in two campaigns, a horde of draconians, and a skill challenge to destroy the teleportation circle the enemies are coming in from.

Anyways I was wondering how to balance the encounter. I want to take the PCs to the edge of the precipice but not a TPK. I won't mind if a character or two die though.
