Balor vs Solar Q

Still, don't you find it annoying that the solar, a monster from the core game, has DR that's not bypassable under the core rules? It kind of feels like cheating.

Hmm? A +4 Unholy Good-Outsider-Bane weapon'll do it just fine.

You mean like the tarrasque?

I would also let a troll die from that weapon's special strike.
Fair enough. It doesn't die in Three Hearts & Three Lions, though, and AFAIK that's the primary inspiration for the D&D troll.

It's not epic.
The criteria to bypass /epic DR is an enhancement bonus of +6 or higher.

An +4 good outsider bane weapon has a +4 enhancement bonus, +6 against good outsiders. Thus meeting the requirements to bypass /epic DR.

Edit: curses, outdrawn. :p

It saying that the attacks like ray of enfeeblement ignore regneration because they do no damage. But the 2nd line clinches it for vorpal, you can't cut off someones head with nonlethal damage.

You can cut it off....but then you end up with a scene where a new head grows back right before your eyes, or like in Pirates of the Caribbean 2, where the body walks over, picks up the head, replaces it, and the cut seals shut before your eyes. Something along those examples.

I'm in the camp of 1) the Solar gets decapitated and 2) it is not killed by this because the weapon isn't doing lethal damage to it.

How it works out visually is the real question...and there are several options.

1) the head falls off and "dies," while the Solar regrows its head. During that time, it is blinded, deafened, etc.

2) the head falls off, but does not die. If the head is placed upon the neck stump, it will reattach. The Solar can still sense fully with its detatched head, but suffers penalties since the origins of its perception are on the ground, while its body is flailing around. (If the Solar is particularly clumsy, it could kick its own head during the recovery process, reinacting a scene from several comedic horror movies...) :)

3) Or, as posted above
I would say that while the sword goes through the neck, it doesn't actually behead the solar. What'd happen is basically that the flesh and muscles would reattach so fast the head wouldn't have a chance to be flung away; so while the sword does do a decapitating strike, the effect of it doesn't happen.

I like that! Very strong, visually- kind of like the T-1000 from Terminator 2 and other movie images.
