Barbarian - likes and dislikes?

After seeing the Berserker in Iron Heroes, the ole Barbarian just pales in comparison.
:heh: right

1) Spot. Why no spot? I mean, what kind of good self-respecting barbarian needs eyeglasses.

2) The lack of options within the class, even the monk has flexibility at some points (although it could be so much better, stuff like different martial schools and... sry, this was about barbarians).

... that's about it

That they don't hate magic users like thier 1e incarnation ;)

Honestly though I think my major problem is that until some of the new fighter feats in PHB II showed up they upstaged the fighter in many ways. I can see them being tougher in melee due to rage and thier normal weapon load but having better movement, uncanny dodge and especially a better skill selection makes the flexibility of the fighter seem like small compensation.

All that smelly hide armor - PHEW!

Seriously, I never really had anyone interested in the "barbarian" because it doesn't really fit in to the concept of our world, at least not as a PC, as an NPC there are quite a few. Stylistically, they are definately all over the map, but stat-wise they are pretty balanced.
Can't really say that I have a firm opinion either way.

cool class, simple enough to serve as a good introduction class to new players, fast movement and DR very niffty ect...

dislike-nothing new here, i'd change trapsense to danger sense and add spot to the skills, drop alignment and illiteracy and change the name to beserker or something.

like to see- various options like a norse beserker (or a nurse beserker ;)), an indian one ect...

They're fine, though the defaulty assumption of illiteracy doesn't fit many of the concepts which fit under "barbarian".

Best thing? All Power Attack, All The Time!
APAATT is the best argument for critical fumbles. :p

I think the alignment restriction is a great thing, it concretely shows that yes, alignment does play a part in combat capabilities, that raging is a non lawful behavior and that degenerate behavior stems from chaos.

CON
Front line with a bad AC that only gets worse.
Other PCs can feel 'weak' in damage dealing department.
No chance for breaking weapons from swinging too damn hard.
All alone on the island of illiteracy. Need more PCs who can’t read.

PRO
Alignment restriction shows some of chaos’s true colors.
Great "throw away" class for NPCs.
Rage works real well with classed monsters with lots of hitdice

I've got an orc barbarian in my World's Largest Dungeon Camp. It's working great. The big guy/crush stuff schtick is fun for the player.

Although, the point that some of the other melee types can feel overshadowed is perhaps true. When the barbie is pumping out 20 or 30 points of damage each hit and the other PC's are doing half that, they can feel a little left out.

That is, until you find something with lots of AC and a decent attack bonus. Mr Barbie goes down right quick when the bad guys have power attack as well. :)

Quick question for you all concerning D&D 3.5, especially since my other thread has gone so well.

What do you like, and dislike, about the Barbarian?

Be as specific or non specific as you like.

Likes:
1) Rage!! and Rage Variants (Whirling Frenzy!).
2) Fast Movement!
3) d12 HD and DR!

Dislikes:
1) The name. "Barbarian" has nothing to do with what the class does, anybody of any class can belong to a barbaric (and I say that with the D&D Steriotype in mind) culture. I'd say less that 5% of the "barbarians" in my homebrew have even a single level in the "Barbarian" class.
2) Barbarian DR is too weak as written. 1-7 is fairly irrelevant at the levels you get it.
3) None of the other Barbarian class features grab my eye. Typically I splash a single level of Barbarian for various fighter-types...

I think that if you broaden the skills that a Fighter has access to... and offer up Rage as a feat-chain... then the Barbarian class falls apart. (much the same about Rangers)
