Barbarians as a Race

Yeah, darn those Wizards, Rogues, Fighters, Druids, Clerics, Paladins and Bards.

Could call them: Magic-user, thief, fighting man, Celtic philosopher priest, Friar (Tuck), knight (Jedi :-p) and Celtic seer priest (Yeah that's an Ovate but it sounds better than Celtic historian priest).

But I like that idea of calling barbarians "conans" ;-)

Women are worth XP, too.

You're forgeting that in 3e XP rules; you get the XP for defeating the challenge. Picking up wenches in the tavern can gain you your level. Just make your Will save vs. beer googles, or you'll end up getting much less XP than you thought the challenge would get you.

Does anyone else think that Barbarian's should be a race instead of a class? To me a Barbarian falls somewhere between a human and giant. They are massive and powerful men who have their own culture, society, and unique characteristics. I don't believe in elf or dwarven Barbarians, they do not seem plausible to me. I think they should be a race and the could make a berserker class instead. I could see a berserker of many different races. What do you guys think?

Maybe as a human subrace.

The minute I saw "Barbarian" come out as a class in 1e's Unearthed Arcana I decided Barbarian was instead going to be a less-civilized and non-magical sub-race of Human with a bonus to Str and Con and a penalty to Int. Thus, it's possible to be a Barbarian Fighter or a Barbarian Thief. I never used the class idea as written then; the 3e version is an improvement but desperately needs a better name - beserker gets my vote so far.

I've since come up with "barbarian" factions for some other races...Arctic Elves (think Elfquest elves) are essentially barbarian elves, for example, at least in the eyes of other elves.

I believe we should just call them Conans, and get rid of the pretenses and move right on to the action!

"Crush enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentation of their women!"

Why would you want to laminate women? You have some sort of latex fetish? (If so, then I completely understand)

Mighty_Veil, the Saxons spent plenty of time losing to the Danes. So much so that King Alfred the Great's domain was once reduced to a few square miles of swamp. There were, to be fair, quite a lot of Saxon victories thereafter.

Well, if barbarians are to become a race, how about making elf and dwarf into classes? At least there's a precedent for those... ;)

Now seriously, I have to chime in with the others: barbarian's a culture, by all means call the class berserker, battlerager or something similar.
