"While raging a barbarian cannot use any Charisma-, Dexterity-, or Intelligence-based skills (except for Balance, Escape Artist, Intimidate, and Ride), the Concentration skill, or any abilities that require patience or concentration, nor can he cast spells or activate magic items that require a command word, a spell trigger (such as a wand), or spell completion (such as a scroll) to function."

"Once per day per bard level, a bard can use his song or poetics to produce magical effects on those around him (Usually including himself, if desired)."

"Starting a bardic music effect is a standard action. Some bardic music requires concentration, which means the bard must take a standard action each round to maintain the ability."

Nothing conflicting (that I can see) in either description. Though it does say it is a magical effect and the rage description rules out a lot of magical abilities. You'd only be able to use the "Inspire" songs, which is no big deal since they're the combat ones.

If someone asked in my game though I'd probably try to argue it as No. Bardic music requires a number of ranks in perform to be able to use your music. If you can't make a perform check (Charisma-based skill) I'd say you can't use your music. It'd be hard to keep tempo and pitch while in a killing frenzy.

Well sure... but you'd be able to use the abilities that didn't require a skill role, eh? Besides, if anyone doesn't sing songs with tempo and pitch, it's the barbarians.

Somewhere in their archives, there are Bardic Knowledge articles on the Wizards site. They're pretty decent.

Good Hope is ok, but considering the attack/damage doesn't stack with inspire courage its a bit of a waste especially compared to other 3rd level spell options such as haste

Why has no-one (at least that I could see) mentioned the Bardic Knowledge ability?

That is a really effective way to learn about things that otherwise you'd have no hope of understanding. My DM curses the Bard 11 in our party whenever this ability comes into a play. Many a supposedly complex teaser/plot hook was quickly unravelled by the Bard. Mind you, there are plenty of circumstances where it doesn't work....

Good hope gives a bonus to more things, and doesn't prevent the bard from casting other spells - both decent effects

actually that was part of the deal with the Wizard (Divination School Specialist)/Bard I was talking about--whether its one looking for information generally (perhaps the "Sage" paradigm), or, say, one that creates and looks for Magic Items

on the Complete Adventurer:
been reading the pages on the WoTC site: the Fochlucan Lyrist--what's the point?! Its just like the Bard. From the site:

_______________
Fochlucan Lyrist

Warrior, thief, spy, poet, woodland champion -- the Fochlucan lyrist is a legendary figure who serves as the herald and teacher to great kings, the champion of the common folk, and the keeper of lore long forgotten elsewhere.

Right--that's exactly the description of a Bard. Sure the stuff about the Fochlucan College sounds interesting...I think some more stuff about the organizational connections between Bards and Druids might be more in order first...like in ceremonial contexts, Bards wearing blue, ovates green, druids white, etc.
