So here's my question: How does the normal +10 max bonus apply to shields? Does it permit a +5 (attack and damage)/+5 Shield Bonus Large Metal Shield or does it permit a +5 Vorpal Bashing Arrow Catching Shield of Moderate Fortification +5.

Well, you can't have a Vorpal Shield using the Core Rules - Vorpal's only for Slashing weapons.

(There might be a Slashing shield in the Complete Warrior... I can't recall.)

But think of it like a double weapon. It's one item... but it can have two sets of +10 weapon plusses on it.

A shield is one item... but it can have up to +10 in shield plusses, and +10 in weapon plusses.

No Vorpal, but you could have a +5 defending/+5 heavy fortification shield for that extra twinkiness...

Who cares how much damage the bash does, with a light shield and a -2 to attack and a mediocre offhand attack, with the shield bash feat you get a +11 to ac.

Make sure it's a wooden shield, or one rust monster will put you to tears, not to mention disjuction.

153,000 GP mind you..

Vorpal's not the important part, it was just the fastest way to an item with a total +20 Enhancement bonus.

Important nitpick: It's not a +20 equivalent; it's two +10 equivalents.
