For the most part, you want to use an at-will power instead of a basic attack. But I can certainly see cases where every power you have is either impossible or disadvantageous to use.

The at-will powers for the melee classes often appear very similar to tome of battle stances. I just think of them that way....you are doing your basic attack but you get to pick one of a couple of benefits to go along with it.

Hi everyone, I understand this is a completely moronic question, but is it even possible, officially, to make a basic attack without using a power? I mean can I simply have my human fighter swing a sword to make an attack? I just got the books, and haven't really had a chance to look at it, but I'm wondering for the creation of my character and choosing powers. Thanks.

yes. A basic attack is a power in fact. Its towards the back of the book. It has a little note about how it can be used with other powers and with opportunity attacks. So a basic attack is a power that everyone can use. theirs also a ranged basic attack and has its own entry as well.

I was wondering about that. So my epic game a few weeks back was wrong... not that anyone ever used a basic attack.
