Basic combat spellcasting strategy - an essay

What sort of spellcaster tactics are you using against your players?

Sometimes they'll learn faster with a bit of an example to follow -- after fighting a sorcerer who uses grease and glitterdust to impede the party while his evil druid companion gihts with summoned creatures and flaming spheres, they might pick up on things a bit faster.

Nothing makes players adapt faster than the fear of impeding doom.

If low level wizards and sorcerers don't feel pretty useless compared with the fighter types then something's wrong. Low levels is where the fighters shine. After that it's all downhill for em as the roles reverse.

Must be something wrong with my PCs then. I don't think I've ever played a low-level wizard (haven't played any sorcerers) in 3e who felt useless in comparison to the fighter types. Did they do less damage than the fighter types? Sure. Did a judicious use of a 1st lvl spell ever provide the turning point in a fight? Very often.
