He's so twisted, he needs a corkscrew to put his robes on in the morning (from the AD&D 2e Kingdom of Karameikos box set).

Were you one of a group of people who had never played a RPG before? So everyone, including the DM, was a complete newbie?

Cheers!

No, but i could have dmed from the get-go. The rules simply aren't that difficult.

I agree. Simpler is better. I don't have time for an RPG with a 1000 pages of core rules.

I want simplicity. Give it all to me in 100 pages or less.

Give it to me WITHOUT dungeonpunk artwork!

. . . and for the LOVE OF PETE, NO MINIATURES OR GRIDS!

Well friend, you're in for disappointment. Count on the New Basic Dungeons & Dragons game (NBDD?) being all about miniatures and grids.

I strongly believe that NBDD will be the gateway to get D&D Miniatures gamers and D&D Online game players into buying hardcover books.

Artwork is part of the package. Newbies need to know what a mace looks like, what armor looks like (sadly, they'll have to go off the horribly historically inaccurate renditions in the PHB).

I think the page count will be less than 100, but count on miniatures and grids. Count on it.

I anticipate the NBDD box will contain:

A battlemat
4 player-character miniatures (Tordek, Mialee, Jovan, Lidda)
12 monsters (a few orcs, some basic undead, an ogre, maybe some goblins, a wolf, and maybe a couple other animals)
Set of dice
Pamphlet for character creation (including stats, classes, races, feats, spells, and equipment).
Pamphlet with game rules (including combat, experience, vision rules, xp, and treasure)
Pamphlet with a sample adventure or two.
Cardboard terrain (either flat or simple punch-out cards to assemble buildings, doors, and such)
Character sheets (premade and blank).

I predict the rules pamphlet will be very similar to the existing D&D Miniatures skirmish game rules, if not identical. This will make it easy for D&D Minis gamers and Star Wars Minis gamers to pick up and play.

We'll see how it goes. :)

That sounds about what I'd expect as well.

Nooooooooooooooooooo!

Oh, well. There's always C&C from Troll Lord Games. Let's see how that turns out. :)

One thing I mourn is the loss of the 10 minute turn structure of pre-3E D&D. It allowed the DM to break up movement, searching, combat, etc. into managable sections.

That's a very good point. I've forgotten how useful that was.

Sorry to be away from the boards, been busy with work and a house guest.

From the catalog
Roleplaying
Dungeons & Dragons Basic Set
A brand-new boxed set designed to give those new to roleplaying an introduction to, and a good understanding of, the D&D game experience. It contains everything needed to generate characters and run encounters, including a complete set of roleplaying dice, streamlined rules drawn straight from the Dungeons & Dragons v3.5 core rulebooks, and miniatures from the D&D Miniatures line. In celebration of the 30th Anniversary of the Dungeons & Dragons brand, this box was named for a classic boxed set from the first years of the game's history and is a great way for current players to introduce the game to a whole new generation.
This was on page 20, "Coming Fall 2004" of the WotC May-August 2004 Catalog.

Hello,

Darn You Bargle.

I nearly cried as a kid when Bargle magic missled her....damn you Bargle!!!!! Damn you to HELL!!!!!!

Now now, lads, buck up. Aleena's fine. Nothing like having a 14th-level Cleric for your father. :) He's also the mayor of Threshold, the default campaign starting town in Karameikos - so she's what you'd call "well-connected".

As for Bargle, he was also still at large in the last published Known World/Mystara continuity I'm aware of.
When the halflings of the Five Shires launched an all-out assault on Bargle's employer Ludwig von Hendriks, the Black Eagle Baron, they routed the humanoid forces he was secretly amassing to seize Karameikos from his cousin the King. Ludwig turned to Bargle for help, and Bargle told him to lead his remaining forces in a counterattack, whose success Bargle would assure with his magics. Once Ludwig was gone, Bargle looted the Baron's treasure chamber and then "teleported far, far, away". He's allegedly been spotted in various locales around the Known World ever since.

Hope this helps! :)

And those dice - will they be blank (without numbers) like the ones in the old box, which you had to scribe numbers onto the sides with this strange pen? will they? hmm? *happily hops around expectantly* :D
