Basic Question About Cover

Yea, they are definitely 2 different things.

concealment just means someone has a more difficult time actually seeing you (darkeness, dim light, invisibility, fog, etc)

Cover means that something (someone) is actually blocking the target (standing near/behind a column, or a table, or boxes, or a wall, etc)

Okay, all these explanations make sense, and agree with what I've read (so far).

If I missed it, I apologize in advance, but how does this address the stealth part?

I mean, as an example, in an encounter, a ranged class creatures is shooting at me while my Avenger is engaged in melee combat with a Kobold. I have Silver Shadow up, and the Kobold moves away from me - I use Persistent Tail to follow as an immediate reaction. PS now gives me the opportunity to role for stealth/hidden if I have cover/concealment which SS gives. I role for stealth and role very high - it beats the passive perception of every creature on the board.

How does the ranged class creature shoot at me now? Is it -5 because I'm stealthed, plus he doesn't know what square I'm in, or does he just get the -5 and still can shoot at the square I'm in?

and to further this, substitute some invisibility power for Silver Shadow and Persistent Tail - does it still work the same way?

Thanks gang! :)

since you made you stealth check, you are effectively invisible to those with a lower passive perception than your stealth check. They don't know where you are and must guess what square you are in, taking a -5 (total concealment) to any ranged or melee attack they made against you (or the square they think you are in)..there would be no penalty to Close or Area attacks (as total concealment does not affect those types of powers. If you had cover from the attack, they'd suffer another -2/-5 (depending on the cover you had) to the roll.

Note that it only takes a minor action to make an Active Perception Check to try to determine what square you were hidden in..if you were just stealthed, and they made the perception roll, they would not be at -5 from Total Concealment, since you would no longer be concealed from them, and you weren't actually invisible.

If you were invisible, you have total concealment from attackers. Note that if you did not make a stealth roll while invisible, they would not have to guess what square you were in, but would still have a -5 to hit (with melee and ranged of course).
