My 13 year old son wants to start DMing some D&D with his friends. I've DMed for him and his friends a couple of times -- see www.totalbullgrit.com/blog/again-the-boys-delve-into-the-dungeon/
So he knows the general conept of the game, and the very basic rules. I've given him a copy of the old Moldvay Basic game and a couple of old Basic adventures for reference. I'd rather get him into the 3rd edition of the game, as that is what I consider the best version, (for many reasons). But I think the whole system is too much for him to start with -- 20 levels worth of stuff in 900 pages in 3 volumes. Is there a more basic version of *modern* D&D available? I know there was a Basic D&D boxed set for D&D3, (I have it), but's it's really only for first level -- it's far too simplistic.
I tried D&D4, but I consider it too much of a departure from what I consider D&D, so I'm not interested in pushing anything like that to him <-- ***This statement is my opinion. It's not intended to start an argument, to sway anyone else, nor to support anyone else's opinion. I'm just stating this to better explain what I'm looking for, (and not looking for).***
I know D&D5 is either out now or soon will be, but I know absolutely zero about it. Is it going further in the D&D4 direction, or does it come back closer to D&D3? Or something else? Also there may be other versions since D&D3 -- "Next"? I'm not really up on the most current versions of the game.
What I'm hoping to learn about/find is a modern Basic D&D game either based on D&D3, or similar enough to D&D3. Something not overwhelming for a beginner DM, but that can lead into the full game if my son and his friends want to pursue full campaigns. In essence, I'm looking for the contemporary version of going from Moldvay Basic D&D to Gygax Advanced D&D.
I'm hoping to go with actual Dungeons & Dragons, not a clone or "OSR" kind of thing. But I'm not ruling it out if that happens to be the only option for a Basic D&D3ish, introductory game.
Any pointers, advice, guidance?
Thanks,
Bullgrit
