Batman: The Dark Knight

My friend was permitted to see the premiere of Batman: The Dark Knight, and his staffer wrote this review:

In comparison to other recent superhero movies, he liked Iron Man a lot, and Hulk almost as much, and thought this blew them away so much that it made them look like amateur hour. He thought it blew away the last Batman as well, which he also liked. He felt this set an entirely different level for superhero movies that will be very difficult for the competition to reach. And, he feels it deserves some Academy Awards, including best director (though he doubts it will get those).

He also said it was scary. Very scary, in the sense that Seven was scary, not as in bloody scary.

I am jonesing for this movie.

Given the quasi-realistic take on it, I think characters like Dr. Freeze and Clayface are out but I wonder how they might handle Catwoman or Penguin or the Riddler.

Bane would be pretty doable as well. I think Dr. Freeze is in the realm of possibility, especially if they take their cues from the Animated Series.

The great thing with Batman and his rogues gallery is that you can vary the film mood by the rogue you use (below with other movie examples):

Slasher flick ("Halloween") -> Mr. Zsaz
Gangster ("Goodfellas") -> Penguin
Whodunnit (any Sherlock Holmes flick) -> Riddler
Heist movie ("Entrapment", "Ocean's Eleven") -> Catwoman
Femme Fatale ("Basic Instinct") -> Poison Ivy
Weird Science Thriller ("Frankenstein") -> Mr. Freeze, Clayface

Great breakdown, Klaus.

I've read a number of reviews so far (posted them at my site) and every single one I've come across has been EXTREMELY positive. My fear now is that these reviews may get the hype up too much... But, I'm still very much looking forward to this so much so that this may be the first midnight showing I've seen in years.
