"Battle Dice" Odds?

I know I'd often rather roll a d8 and divide by 2 than 'roll' a d4. But I'm not sure of the point of the d6 and d10...

I found a bunch of 12-sided d4s at the Chessex booth at GenCon a couple of years ago; they roll much better than the little pyramids, and they're the only d4s I use now.

One slight advantage is that you can tell very easily if the roll is above 10 or not.

D6s (at least the larger ones) are easier to read than d20s, (at least the regular sized ones) So anyone can tell at a glance if the roll is good or not.

I only bring this up because I play occasionally with someone who has an unorthodox (read: cheating) method for counting up his die rolls. When he bothers to roll dice at all. (brings a laptop with an allegedly random number generator to games)

And that right there, in a nutshell, is why I require players to use actual dice. I know all too well how easy it is to hack a pseudo-random number generator.

Superstition or not, I swear that I roll like a god whenever I'm behind the Screen, but if I play, I'm haunted by Beshaba's attentions.

That's the way I have rolled d20s for the last 30 years. It's the way we had to in 'the old days' before they made dice with 1 to 20 on for people who can't add up. And I always use the same d10 for the roll (the first one I ever bought).

Don't use random number generators; I'd much rather roll the dice in the open, especially if I'm the DM. One of my players uses a RNG but, with the number of 1s he come up with I don't have a problem with it.

And you play with these players... why?

I only play with people I feel I can trust. If I ever found out someone was cheating they'd be kicked out without so much as a warning.

It's not that my players do, or even would, it's just that the possibility is there. The person may not even realize that what they are doing is wrong or that there is a problem with the dice rolling program they are using. It's also quite possible that the algorithm used for the dice roller is accidentally flawed. That happens quite often with pseudo-random number generators.

Besides, what is wrong with rolling dice?

Sorry, I guess that was directed more at the person you responded to than at you. Having issues with PRNGs is of course entirely different from suspecting your players of intentionally cheating.
