'Starbuck is the best'

There is a big difference between being the best at anything of 16 people and being the best at anything of thousands of people. There is a very small pool from which they now have to compare or compete.
From what I have seen, I will agree that she would not be the best in the old fleet before the attack, but she could be the best in the new very limited group of pilots.
With the amount of deceit going on it is not surprising that each eprson seems to be picking one or a very select few to trust and they end up getting everything.

You know, another thing occurs to me: One could make a case that Adama sending Starbuck to do this was also a way for him to let her know he still trusted her after she revealed her part in Zack's death a few weeks (to us) ago. I'm not saying that's the only reason he did it, but it might be a bit of the subtext involved.

The skills don't coorelate as the "controls" are completely different. What I said was that the coordination and instincts required for both are equally applicable. By that I mean that I think Starbuck has a talent for figuring trajectories and a lot of physical coordination that would make it easier for her to master either skill.

In other words: the Pilot skill is different from your ranged attack bonus, but Dex helps with both.

The bigger question is why Six pushed him to make the Cylon detector. She must have a reason, but I can't figure it out.

Perhaps to use it as a wedge to divide the surviving humans, especially given the fact that the results can be falsifiled? After all, having it read someone as a cylon when they're not can lead to some interesting results. At least interesting to the real cylons.

The Cylon detector (tm) works, so it can give accurate results whenever Baltar wants it to, and it provides the humans with a false sense of security, which the Cylons can now take advantage of.

I'm not saying that it doesn't work. It clearly does. I'm just saying that Baltar and the Cylons can really screw up someone's day by saying one thing while the detector says something totally different, hence Six's pushing for the detector.
