A sacred cow of Star Trek TOS was the trioka of Kirk, Spock and Bones and thier relationship. Now just imagine if instead of TNG they updated TOS and recast Bones as female. I guess by your logic that would have been fine because you still had the trioka.
But that's not an update. That would be a remake. An adaptation.

I know that BSG is going to be a remake, and therefore I'm open-minded about it. IOW, I'm taking a wait-and-see. :D

Would a remake with Bones cast as a female have been better?
It may change the dynamic of the relationship. Then again, it may not, if they established a longstanding friendship, if you can believe that a man and a woman can have a close friendship without any romantic nor sexual tension or notion between them.

Personally, I'm old school. There is no way in hell a man can be best bud with a woman, unless the man is using it to get in bed with a woman. :p

Yes, a remake. An adaptation.

Much the same way that “Smallville” re-envisions the origins of Superman. Several elements from established DC canon (that many claimed would destroy the character if changed), have been re-written or, in some cases, omitted.

Much the same way “Enterprise” has re-envisioned several elements from the original Star Trek. Or did you think that they were going to use the same vintage special effects and cardboard sets that they used in the original, just because this series takes place decades before Kirk and company?

There will be changes, to be sure. The show will be different, but that’s okay. I’m from the “glass is half-full” school of thought. I have to believe that this guy has something up his sleeve.

Keep in mind that the original show was made in the ‘70’s. There have to be changes.

I wasn’t thrilled to hear that they’ve changed my favorite character, but I plan to give the new Battlestar Galactica a chance.

It might surprise me.

I don't know. Wouldn't it be best to judge such a project on its own merits?

Way I see it, if it sucks it sucks. Any particular changes are beside the point.

After reading the articles, I plan on giving this show a chance. I particularly liked the statement that they were going to be avoiding a lot of the cliched Trek plots. Here's to no more Time Travel. The fact that they are trying to make the show more realistic might turn out to be a very good thing. Realism is something sadly lacking from most Science Fiction TV, only really showing up in Babylon 5 and Firefly. And before anyone decides I don't like Star Trek, I love the show, even though I have been feeling a growing sense of dissapointment with Enterprise.

Even though I completely object to making Starbuck a female, I do hope the show does get made. I am willing to give it a chance at least.

Other than some ocaisionaly hokey plots the Original Battlestar Galatica was actualy fairly realistic in its science (except for the phasers on ships but only B5 of all major Sci-fi seems to have done that right). As realistic as firefly is in its depiction of death and the human condition I would not hold it up as realistic in science or ecconomics.

All they need is a proper cast with great chemistry, especially the female who will be cast as "Starbuck." She needs to be strong and sexy like Kira Nerys. The first person who comes to mind is Kirsten(sp?) Cloke who was the leader of an air squadron in FOX's Above and Beyond.

You have good taste in actresses. Kristen Cloke was the best thing about Space: Above and Beyond, but I think she's better at dark, brooding roles than the swashbuckling kind, which Starbuck would have to be. I'd like to see Cloke make an appearance on a scifi show again, maybe even BG, but in a different role. Y'know, while I was watching Wing Commander (a guilty pleasure - I love that flick!) it occurred to me that Cloke would have been a better choice for the role Saffron Burrows played.

This actually sounds quite good (to my complete surprise). Of course, only time will tell, but as long as they concentrate on the characters and the drama rather than silly plots and special effects, then I'll be hooked. :)
