Bebilith Armor Destruction overpowered..

Celtavian

Dragon Lord
I fought a Bebilith. I am a 10th lvl +1 Full Plate wearing Paladin with a 20 strength. This demonic Bebilith tore my armor off like it was tissue paper.

The Bebilith rolled a 2 on it's grapple check and still tore my armor off easily. (I did get unlucky on my roll, but still.) All it needs to do is make one opposed grapple check after a claw hit and your armor is bye, bye. The thing has a +14 attack bonus with it's claws and a +8 size bonus to grapple. It gains a +22 bonus to it's grapple check to tear the armor off a medium size creature. It can even tear magical armor which only gains a bonus equal to it's magical enhancement bonus. This is a way overpowered ability.

Does anyone else feel that the Bebilith's armor destroying abilities are way overpowered?

Well, no ability really is overpowered or underpowered. Mostly it depends on how the DM uses a creature's ability, but it is also important to take the creature into consideration. Bebiliths, the feared demonic entities that even hunt demons themselves, ought to be relatively powerful, even though they have a realatively low CR. Their armor-tearing ability gives them this "strength".

Besides, sundered or destroyed items can be repaired. Even magical items can be repaired by using the appropriate Item Creation feats.

Here we go again with the pissing and moaning over items getting destroyed...

(No offense, Celtavian...)

Re

Tom,

It is not really the item that concerns me. +1 Full Plate to a lvl 10 character is fairly easy to obtain.

My problem is the ease in which this CR: 9 creature tore my armor off. It should at least be limited to the plus on the armor or something.

Eh, that's the power that makes it a special creature, though. As Cyraneth noted, Bebiliths are "the feared demonic entities that even hunt demons themselves." Besides the armor-ripping, I don't believe they have all that much going for them in the way of special abilities.

I would think that +5 armor should rate a bit better than a +5 on the grapple check. What would +5 armor get if it were trying to make a saving throw (as compared to normal armor)? Isn't it based on creator level, which is pretty high for armor that powerful.

Anyway, I'm too lazy to do the research but I'd think the bonuses should be comparable for the sake of consistency.

Don't mind me; I just split off a spoiler discussion about something else, which also required editing out a piece of this post. :)

The funny thing is that demons don't usually wear armour....

Compared to a rust monster (CR 3), a fologub (Psionics handbook, CR 3), or any creature with similar powers to destroy items fairly trivially?

No.
