Beguiler in core books game

Why bother with any rogue levels? It's not worth losing your caster levels and you don't gain much...a couple more skill points and some piddling sneak attack which will miss anyways and can't even use with your spells (since beguilers have no or virtually no "weapon-like" spells).
I was thinking more of Evasion... but otherwise you are correct. A 2 level dip is all I would ever go for. ;)

Most of my arcane casters do a 2 level dip for evasion. The only one recently that didn't was my wiz/ur-priest/mt because I had to cram everything in for 9th/9th level spells at 20th level.

Thanks,
Rich

I've found that barring undead, constructs, SR or high Will saves, a well placed Confusion spell can absolutely decimate the opposition. ;)

The Beguiler is like a specialist sorcerer. He can do lots of enchantment and illusion stuff but no blasting, conjuring, transmuting, divination, etc., stuff.

Yep, imagine a sorceror with only enchantment and illusion spells.
I gotta point out that this is very much incorrect, enough so to make me wonder if you guys are all that familiar with'em. The beguiler gets a nice helping of spells that aren't enchantment or illusion. The beguiler in my campaign makes extensive use of haste, slow, expeditious retreat, dispel magic, glitterdust, knock, halt, obscuring mist, spider climb, locate creature, freedom of movement, and many other spells from the divination, abjuration, conjuration, and transmutation schools.

What is the source of Fey heritage feats, and why are they a possible problem in combination with Beguilers?

I believe they're in PH2 and give SLAs such as dimension door and summon nature's ally. They sort of "patch up" some of the limitations of a beguiler.

There are two concerns that I would have with integrating a Beguiler into a core game. First, I would worry about stepping on other player's toes. In a core game, a Cha-based rogue, sorcerer with enchantment spells, or bard are going to be the classes that focus on social abilities and subterfuge. If you already have these PCs in the party, they might be dissapointed to learn that another character is going to take part of their spotlight. Second, IDHTBRIFOM, but I thought a number of the Beguiler's spells were spells that came from non-core books. If I were another caster, I would be kinda pissed if another player got to bring in non-core spells and I didn't.

I agree that if PHB2 is included for one, it should be included for all, with the caveat that the DM can strike down any particular item(s) (such as particular spells, items, feats, or other rules) that doesn't 'feel' right to the DM.

I for one, cannot stand Dragon Class Anything, and although I like Knights, Beguilers, and Duskblads to different extents, I won't allow the Dragon class in my game, even if PHB2 has otherwise become cannon for me.
