Behold the Mighty Frost Giant!

You're still thinking in 3E terms. A Monstrous Elite Soldier's Defenses are determined by reading off the "Level 11" line entry in the MM's Elite Soldier Monster Table.

That doesn't make the OP's numbers right, but you have to stop applying rules meant for PC char-gen (e.g., that Wis effects your Will Defense) to monsters or NPCs.

*nod*

If monster stats could be generated via formula, there'd be no need for the table we're supposed to get in the MM.

He needs an action point. So far the examples have shown that solos get 2 action points and elites get 1, that helps them even out the actions against a larger number of people.

I really like the stomp ability by the way:)

To make it more effective though, the ability that he uses to get the enemies prone, the breath, should "prone them" even on a miss... :)

Fixed the Defenses. They were indeed, too low. I started trying to "crack the code" of enemy defenses-- and while there doesn't seem to be a "rule" there definately is a pattern by type & level as far as average points between AC, Fort, Ref, Will, etc. Simply comparing the stat mod w/ the listed defense will show my point here. So I changed his base defenses to 15 before adding level/2 and Stat to it. I could have done 16/13/16 or something like that instead, but decided the stats made enough difference that it was fine as is.

So an 11th level character w/ +4 in stat and +3 from class abilities, etc, will have a +12 to hit w/ his main attack-- making it less than 50% on the Fort, over 50% on the Ref, etc. So I think it "balances" for its level now... I think.

I would imagine fire giants as the soldiers and frost giants as brutes, given how they've been portrayed over the years in D&D, but I like the looks of this monster.

However, is level 11 a bit low for a frost giant? Given the monsters we've seen thus far, I'd drop it in the level 15 range, basically mid-paragon. A gargoyle is level 9, a chuul is level 10, and the bodak skulk is level 16, for comparison.

I like the stomp, although I think I liked the stomp knocking people prone better than the breath weapon.

I'd see a Frost Giant as more of an elite than a soldier.

He is an Elite soldier.

The thing that makes him a soldier is Less HP than a Brute, but w/ Higher Defenses. I went this way because Frost Giants are the most advanced of all the evil giants-- they actually have metal armor & weapons. Fire Giants do too, so they would also be ranked as Soldiers. The Hill and Stone Giants would be brutes. Cloud and Storm Giants would probably be Soldiers too, but at very high level, or they might be controllers (at least the Storm Giant would).

As to his level being too low, this is just a Frost Giant Raider. There will likely be Frost Giant shamans, berserkers, Jarls, etc to fill the higher levels.

Great thread epochrpg!

I would like to see more frost flavor to the giant. I did like the 3e implication of frost giants being able to hide in snow and because they are as smart as average humans, I would like to see more team tactical options for him.

I like the boulder followup that knocks people prone.
