Goodman Game's Complete Guide to Beholders I think is also a good alternative reference. Not canon and it alters the beholder a bit, but it's a good sourcebook for inspiration (like eye-beam wielding beholder cultists). I remember a while ago I ran a strange but interesting adventure consisting of a trip into the shattered mind of an insane beholder using stuff from that book and I, Tyrant.
