Best 1st level adventure out there

I gotta say Of Sound Mind was great. Also, The Hamlet of Thumble is super cool too. Problem: I've only read these two modules, not DMed them, so take that for what it is worth.

I realy enjoyed running Sunless Citadel but my ALL time absolute favorite start off module is "Under Illefarn".

Penny for Penny one of the best written modules I have ever run. Though set in the Realms it needn't stay there.

I'm curious if anyone ever did a conversion for it??

My suggestion is Whispering Woodwind and then Of Sound Mind.

WW comes with suggestions for scaling it up or down, and I think you can scale it down without losing any of the flavor. It is designed for 2d level characters.

OSM is designed for 1st level characters, but is pretty tough for them. It would be better suited for 2d level, probably with little or no adjustment.

One I just remembered that has a good combo of elements, and also happens to be authored by an EN Worlder ... Gorgoldand's Gauntlet. It was published in Dungeon (forget which issue), and was on the CD that came with Dragon 287. It makes a good short into to other adventures.

I enjoy Sunless Citadel. The module is very well written and plays pretty well. However, it is a huge dungeon crawl which may or may not be waht you are looking for.

I played Wizards Amulet with Crucible of Freya several times and enjoyed it tremendously. It's more a small campaign setting with the free Wizards Amulet adventure and the additional free supplement on their page plus the maps.

Of Sound Mind: Rocks. Didn't play it yet since it didn't fit into my campaigns, but I read several story hours about it and loved to read it.

Just feel to pimp some Kalamar modules... Their biggest advantage, similar to some of the abovementioned adventures, is that they are more regional sourcebooks with plenty possibilities to put other stuff in :D
- Coins Trilogy (Root of all Evil is the first part) is more a full campaign, but I played it twice myself now and would start it again any day with another group.
- Invasion of Arun'Kid. If you want to start your adventure/campaign as farmer boys in a small village, this is the action loaded stuff you need!
- Stand& Deliver: First 3.5 adventure... medieval mysticism and knightly tournaments in a small barony.
- Aldrivs Revenge: Courtly intrigues mixed with an old curse.

There are some others (Sayburrs storyhour on the Kalamar boards started the Coins Trilogy with NeMorens Vault), and I enjoyed Sunless Citadel as well (MEEEPOOO!) but these are my favorites.

As others have said, it really depends on your campaign. I do not recommend Sunless Citadel for newbies, either DM or player.

The two I would recommend are:

Wizard's Amulet/Crucible of Freya from Necromancer
Hamlet of Thumble from Open World Press

Necromancer publishes many adventures, and their product is consistently high quality. Hamlet of Thumble is a first product from a small company, and really stellar. The second module in this world, Village of Oester, should be in shops any day now, if it isn't there already. (Though my FLGS hasn't called me to tell me my preordered copy is in....)

Dungeon Magazine #4 Trouble at Grog's :D

B1 In Search of the Unknown
B2 Keep on the Borderlands
B3 Palace of the Silver Princess
B4 Lost City
B5..... :D

This was a great 1st adventure! I ran a group of players through it when I was 15 or 16, and we had a great time. Except when we were finished, everyone wanted to play a half-ogre...
