Best 1st level adventure out there

But the humor value has long since worn off, and you never seem to have anything else to say.

who's being humorous. i was being honest. can't someone express their honest opinion? ignore me if you want that is your perogative.

FWIW, Keep on the Borderlands STILL remains the best intro module.

but i find it ironic you agree with me.

Here's another free one that my players really enjoyed...

The Lost, by N. Todd Antil - one of the first adventures published (around the same time as the Wizard's Amulet) and not a bad one, IMO (if a bit linear). The original publisher, Mystic Alchemy Gameworks, appears to be long-defunct... but...

Google-fu tells me you can find a copy here: http://www.jenwa.org/y/rpg/3DnD/TheLost.pdf

Crucible of Freya certainly isn't for the faint of heart. If the PC's are the types that say "Orcs! Get 'em!" and then charge in, they're likely going to die. It's a great first level adventure partly because of Fairhill and all the supplemental material on NG's website. It definitely makes a nice launch point for a campaign.

Necromancer Games' Crucible of Freya has been the best beginning d20 module I've run (especially if you throw in the mini-prequel The Wizard's Amulet and all of the bonus material available on their website). Second-favorite beginning adventure for 3.xE so far is Return to the Keep on the Borderlands (converted for 3.xE). I just got Lost City of Barakus (again by Necromancer Games) and am very eager to try it out, but haven't studied it in depth enough to recommend it yet.

Yeah, I really liked the Crucible of Freya. Really fun, challenging, perfect tone and scope, and easy to adapt to your setting.

i would definitely recommend Sunless Citadel over Crucible of Freya for newbies. i found Crucible a lot more difficult and much less forgiving than Citadel.
That's interesting. My experience was the opposite.

I ran Sunless Citadel the first time I ever DMed, and I thought it was lethal. Half my players were newbies, the other half experienced, but I avoided several TPKs only by fudging.

Crucible of Freya I ran maybe two months later, with most of the same players. It was much more fun for everyone, and not quite as deadly.

I would say Crucible is lots more challenging... but people are more likely to use "real world" tactics than in the Citadel (boot the door style).

I like the sunless Citadel. But the main reason for that is meepo. My dm played him wonderfully. "Rescue Dragon Now" he'll say that after after every encounter. We didn't really worry about the ethics of letting the kobolds live, because of meepo we let them off scott free killed the goblins for them and brought the dragon back to them. Yes meepo was my favorite npc.

Modules that I'd recommend for a 1st level adventure:

'Of Sound Mind' is one of the best modules around.
'Nemoren's Vault' has a solid story, and a classic old-school feel.
'Life's Bazaar' is a not only a good module, it's the first of a solid series of modules...better than the WotC adventure path, IMHO.
'Root of All Evil' - an excellent starting module by Kenzer that is set in Kalamar, but could easily be used in any setting

One of my favorite low-level adventures is a 1st edition module called Cult of the Reptile God. It had everything! Conspiracy, intrigue, mystery, fighting, treasure, good maps, multiple locations, a variety of NPCs and a variety of things for the PCs to do.
