Best and Worst Settings?

Favorite:
Official License: Al-Qadim, for making excellent use of the 2nd ed kit mechanic, removing bizarre racial prejudices, and dripping flavour and ideas off of every single page.

Least Favorite:
Maztica: Everything Al-Qadim did right, Maztica seemed to do wrong. Clunky use of the 2ed kit mechanic. Anti-immersion into the culture it was presenting. Limiting the scope of the boxed set to what was presented in the rather bland novels. To me this suppliment represents the worst things about late era TSR: tacking on everything to the Forgotten Realms, novel tie-ins, and lacking ambition or edge in what is published.

Thanks Rob! :) I'll be sure to do that. Hell I might even just put up a webpage that says "BUY ENIGMA of the Arcanexus." (Sorry Riddle-Riddler-Enigma. You know it happens! ;) )

But I do hope that Veil of Malice will be available soon. Could use the second part you know...*hint*

Unfortunately, I didn't have anything to do with Veil of Malice but that shouldn't stop you from getting it when it does come out.

DPG looks at it this way, quality before quantity. Veil of Malice *might* take some time to come out but it will be worth the wait.

And don't sweat the slip up too much, I'm just a picky perfectionist. :)

BTW, read this if you haven't already. Or not. On second thought don't read it. Heh.

ok, my best/worst (A)D&D/d20 settings are:
Best:
Mystara - I've always loved it, and I don't know why. Its fun, got plenty of interesting palces to go and people to kill, and adventurers don't feel constantly over shadowed by high level NPCs. Sort of like FR without being shunted out into the wilderness to escape Elminster's name.

Dark Sun - Very cool concept, plus I spent way too much time on those really old dark sun computer games. I loved the constant struggle for survival and alternate weapon/armor materials.

Scarred Lands- What I run my current game in. I enjoy how the divine war is still in recent memory for many of the longer lived people on the planet and the area outside the pockets of civilization are very dangerous to travel in. Another aspect I enjoy is the manner in which the gods are treated like a pantheon rather than a whole lot of competeing monothiestic faithes. In many settings, a character will worship a god and kick the hell outta followers of another. In SL people may very well worship Denev to help their crops, call on Madriel for healing, and offer sacrifices to Vangal to avoid his wrath. Its alot more like real world polythiesm than many fantasy settings.

Worst:
Forgotten Realms: I don't really hate it, I just think its too many diverse areas stapled together with way too many established, possibly epic level, NPCs doing everything. Why fight the gnolls? Drizzt will be along soon enough, I'm sure. I have run it before, to decent results, but I just don't like the feel of it. Also, yes, I know that the NPCs never have to show up.

Greyhawk: Its like Mystara, only boring and has a regular center of the planet. ;)

Never played but would be willing to try: Plane scape, Kingdoms of Kalamar (I may have to have someone just explain it to me, I can't stay awake while reading it), Ravenloft, Nyambe

I am NOT trying to be contrary here... but...

Best: Dragonlance. Dragonlance was the only setting that made 2e work. In 3e, I also have to nominatre it for worst however. I just love the Wizards of High Sorcery, Solamnic Knights, and the pantheon... the pantheon was vivid! It is unique, alive, easily invoked... the pantheon was absolutely great. The whole balance theme is also very, very nice, and great that Wizards have to wear robes of their patron moon/deity of magic.

Best 3e then: I am edging towards eitehr Kalamar or Greyhawk... No, Kalamar, definitely.

Worst... I have no idea.

Speaking strictly TSR/WotC -
Best Settings: Ravenloft and Masque of the Red Death
Least Favorite: Dragonlance. And I'll think I'll just leave it at that. :)

Hmmm....

The Campaign I had the Most Fun In: Palladium FRPG. We were young(er), dumb, and didn't know how to abuse a bad rules system. Besides, it kept our Saturday nights busy!

The Campaign I had the Least Fun in: I still haven't warmed up to the Shadowchasers setting. This is perhaps because the two DMs I've had have either put in feats that reward having characters conforming to their ideas of Christianity, or have put in a Christian organization (and then professed profusely that they aren't pressuring anyone).

The Campaign I Would Most Like to Experience: At this point, it's Planescape. Of course, that's likely to change; usually it's the one that could be called "the next one to be published."

The Campaign I Would Least Like to Experience: Dragonlance. No. Just ... no.

The Campaign I Can Be Most Creative In: Any homebrew. Published settings, I have to read what everyone else has come up with first. I can't just take the concept and strip out the book (because then I'm out $40).

The Campaign I Can Be Least Creative In: Star Wars. Ugh. It's someone else's party, and all the bad guys have already been and gone. There's no other interesting story to tell. Besides, the Jedi are just too much. They have power because of their genetics? No thanks.

PS: What is Synnibar, exactly? It sounds familiar, but I can't remember exactly what I've heard.

I also should note that I had the misfortune of playing the game, at a 'con, with the game's creator.

It's the only time I've gotten up in the middle of a session and walked away from the table.

Best: Kingdoms of Kalamar

Honorable Mention: Harn

Most Anticipated: Garweeze Wurld

Most Disliked: Dragonlance

Dishonorable Mention: Forgotten Realms

Coolest alternate Earth setting: Call of Cthulhu

Coolest DnD setting: Planescape

Best Setting Evar: Paranoia

Blandest DnD setting: Greyhawk

Vanilla setting that just seems hard to work with: FR

Setting most commonly played: Homebrew
