What is the strongest magic item (from the cheap items) from the DMG. Don't look at the class, etc. just see the item in hands of a level 1 PC of a PHB class of your choice.

I think the answer is "It depends". A phylactory of faithfulness would be highly valuable for a person playing a paladin but pretty worthless in general to most other classes.

I myself voted for the eyes of the eagle because they grant a +5 circumstance bonus to Spot rolls. Combat almost always begins with a spot roll (to determine who was surprised) so this item in particular continues to be of real and measurable value long after the hero has aquired more powerful magic items.

Bag of tricks (gray)... (cant find dmg...)
Bracers of armor (+1)
-too abstract, provides no presige or ability outside combat
Cloak of resistance (+1)
-too abstract, provides no presige. Adds a bit of mystry
Eyes of the eagle
-Usefull and sneaky
Goggles of minute seeing
-er... cant find dmg... but a bit 'odd' if its what i think it is
Hand of the mage
-er... cant find dmg... If it allows you to bump something... COOL.
-(bumping a guard, pushing a vase, etc... could be usefull)

Pearl of power (1st-level spell)
-(cant find dmg)... if its 1 1st lvl spell per day, by any player, then COOL.

Phylactery of faithfulness
- Er... no.
Stone of alarm
- Er... no
Pipes of the sewers
- Er... no
Brooch of shielding
- Er.. no (too abstractly useless)
Wand 50 charges (1st level spell)
- Maybe... depends on the spell... next best of the lot

Shield/Buckler +1
- Er... no (too abstract)
Armor +1
- Er... no (too abstract)

Mithril Chain Shirt
- AHA, provides prestige... even though its useless, its mithril.

And the winner is:

Something else : Gems with light cast on them!

Different colour gems give you disco lights. A must have accessory to any bard. Good at birthdays. These have earning potential for any bard. Unlike Armor+1 which

Pearl of Power... even at high levels its useful. Get 3-4 of them and fire away those killer magic missiles.

Those a little more expensive I would say the glove of storing. Free Quick Draw feat for any object and a lot of surprises for enemies....

Big fan of the Hat of Disguise right here. Sure it's not all that useful in combat, but outside of combat it can be really useful. Anything from instantly sprucing yourself up for the noble your about to meet to walking right by town guard thats looking to put your head on a pike.

for a 1st lvl wand i like magic missile, minimum of 2 hp dmg, nochance of miss, and 110 ft range...it ain't the end all, but it ain't too bad. at least for my style of play :)
