Boots of Striding and Sprining (pre-erreta). How much are they supposed to cost now? Even if you double the DMG price they're cheap for double movement and what is it, +10 Jump?

Best?

There are SO many factors that need to be taken into account...

The Brooch of Shielding is nice if most of your opponents cast magic missile (and even if they don't, what other item in this price range nullfies the effect of a spell?).

Pearl of Power is okay, but it's a one use per day item.

The +5 to Spot checks from the Eyes of the Eagle is almost always handy.

A fully charged wand of Cure Light can be a life-saver in nearly any low level fight.

I voted for other, though, because I'm terribly fond of the Dull Gray Ioun Stone with continual flame cast on it.

Your results may vary.

Sleep ?? Its close to useless after a while thou... no low HD creatures...

Sheesh, man, what the hell are YOU fighting at 1st level?

I say again, it's a powerhouse. Name another 1st level spell that can wipe out such a large chunk of enemies using just one charge from your wand. If you can't use 50 charges of sleep before you hit 3rd level or so...

Well, you must have a rat-bastard DM, eh?

Color Spray. It does a few things better than Sleep but Sleep is probably just as good a choice.

I also think that a wand of True Strike, Mage Armor or Spider Climb could be REALLY handy, depending on the exact party composition and mission.

But overall, Wand of CLW is hard to beat for raw utility.

Not listed, but how about that Quaals Feather Token of Whip? Have you seen the stats on that thing for a mere 500 gp? Best is if you use four of them at a time. You can always have one in your hand as you keep releasing one. Sure, it is used up after "only" an hour, but you can clear the entire dungeon in that time.

The price was changed to 6000 gp in the DMG errata.

I have to toss my hat in for the Glove of Holding. Got a Flaming Shocking weapon that you want turned on? Pop! Need a torch immediately? Pop! Need to make an excape with that lit smokestick immediately? Pop! Want a tanglefoot bag immediately? Pop! Want to smuggle in a tiny creature? Pop! Have to go in somewhere unarmed? Pop! Need that potion of Cure Light Wounds NOW? Pop!

On the subject of Quaal's Feather Tokens, I'm a huge fan of the Tree. A big oak can have a multitude of uses, and a druid with Wood Shape can toss one of these down and create a hideout pretty much anywhere.
