Best Necromancer/Undead books out there?

I think the only book not mentioned here is AEG's Undead. Been a while since I've used it so I can't comment on it fairly.

Just want to say I either have or have read many of the books mentioned here.

But for me, best damn city of Necromancers is still Hollowfaust. (Yes I'm biased but still!) (Ghostwalk has one major positive for it. Orcus is in it. Otherwise it's not great but it is decent.)

Overall I'd say Psion's recommendation for Necromancer's Legacy, is a very good choice. Just not sure it's best so far. I'll wait for Liber Mortis to make that judgement.

Well, it's a bit odd for a book on undead to have no undead creature stats.

It does have a few cool prestige classes, some of which would make great role playing opportunities. But really, most of the book is, as they say, fluff, and if you already have a pretty good bead on what you want out of undead in your game, it's a little weak.

Do any of these books have a version of the philosopher from the Complete Book of Necromancers- someone who studies death and undeath. And is not a combat machine just meant to be killed?

For my money, there are only three books worth reading on the subject of necromancy and undeath in RPGs, and they are the Complete Book of Necromancers, Hollowfaust: City of Necromancers, and Van Richten's Guide to the Lich. Most other books are full of rather obvious variations on the same old archetypes, but these three just seem to ... breathe new life into the walking dead, so to speak. I heartily recommend them. Everything else is just footnotes and afterthoughts.

The spectral loremaster from EA: Necromancy sounds the closest.

Begin shameless plug.

I have to put in a mention of my own Dark Arts of Necromancy (Anubium). My writing partner and I tried to avoid redoing what others have already done. We wanted to offer up something that could be used along with all of the other products out there. To that end, we offered up a new core arcane necromancer class and several new/different PrCs (check out the Necrophage), along with a few different organizations tailor-made for necromancers. For those who like undead critters, we included templates and new ways to create/boost a necromancer's undead minions. Also, we put in a lot of new spells for those who just can't get enough of that sort of thing.

I bought Necromancer's Legacy because of this thread and it is quite spiffy.

Thing is there is only one PrC for midlevel undead for armies (the Legion). Is there any other books with Sgts., Lts., and such? As much as necromancers can be in control of their army, they can't be everywhere and micromanage it. And killing the officers will disrupt almost any army.
