Hi

I'm currently playing and DM'ing 4e, and I have to say I love it and the group i'm in do too.

However, I've also joined another group who are primarily composed of White Wolf players, and it will soon be my turn to DM for them, and wanting to get away from the whole werewolf/vampire thing thought I'd go for a fantasy game, however the group have tried 4e before and it didn't float their boat, because of the high reliance on miniature based combat.

So what would you folk say is a good Fantasy based RPG that doesn't need miniatures? I was thinking Pathfinder, but I think it may be hard to DM without mini's

White Wolf's Exalted?

It is going to have a steep learning curve playing by the RAW but the themes and ideas in it are quite fun! I enjoy them at least! And, the basics of the game are such that if the know WW's other games, they won't have to spend a lot of time on the basics of the game and can start looking at other things.

if you do, look up EdExalted for a character builder. It's free as long as you register! (No, that's not mine.)

1E DND? BECMI?

That's all I got at the moment.

Hiya.

Honestly? Any fantasy RPG that isn't D&D/d20 3rd edition or later. If you are looking for a game that has a lot of "world/character/setting fluff", packed with sweet RPG goodness, and a dirt simple system to boot...take a look at Talislanta (5th edtion was the last). All that stuff is free for DL at: Talislanta | Still No Elves! ). The only warning to that is that it is "non-standard" in much of it's ways (No Elves! ... ;) ).

And, you can't get much better than "free"; everyone can have all the books. The books are all primarily black and white, so printing sections and pages is a no brainer.

If there isn't a fear of some math, try one of the toolbox systems like HERO or GURPS.

Also check out Savage Worlds.

Deadlands is quite well done.

You could use a system of your choice and use the RIFTS setting- that's usually loads of fun!

Hey, I'm going to suggest that you pick up the Mirrors book...
[ame="http://www.amazon.com/Mirrors-World-Darkness-White-Hardcover/dp/1588463834/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1297956921&sr=8-3"]Amazon.com: WoD Mirrors (World of Darkness (White Wolf Hardcover)) (9781588463838): Benjamin Baugh, Rob Donoghue, Martin Henley: Books[/ame]

or if the print book is a little too pricey...

World of Darkness: Mirrors - White Wolf | RPGNow.com

...it's a sourcebook for adapting the nWoD rules for different genres, there are especially good rules for fantasy adaptation(that covers more than one type including High, Sword & Sorcery, and Weird Fantasy) with new races and templates... as well as a fully fleshed out urban fantasy setting.

Desolation

Mechanicly its a 50/50 dice pool system with an improv magic system.
The setting is not your typical fantasy setting however. Its a post-apocalyptic fantasy setting.

My regular group is HUGE WOD fans and we fell head over heals for Desolation
