Best Shows on DVD

I just reserved Band of Brothers at the video store, but so far, my wife and I have enjoyed (off the top of my head)

The Prisoner
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Smallville
Twin Peaks
I, Claudius
Ken Burns' Civil War
V
Cadfael
Monty Python

Actually, now that I think about it excepy for kids' movies, we hardly rent actual feature films anymore. Huh.

Farscape Season 1. I'd seen a few scattered episodes but never been able to plug them into their proper place in the full storyline. Awesome, awesome show.

I'd like to get my hands on The Young Ones but I balked at doing a special order... none of the stores here seem to carry it.

Doh! I forgot about the Farscape Season One DVD's. I'm waiting to see the price on the Season 2 set. I hate how the Star Trek and Farscape DVD's (even the sets) are so expensive. :( It's the one thing holding me back at the moment.

As far as I know Season 2 isn't out yet, as a boxed set. S1 was certainly expensive but it was cheaper than buying the individual DVDs at least...

Hey, if your going to count highbrow BBC stuff, then I also have I, Claudius (which is awesome.)

24 is good stuff. The gimmick of real-time action works, but it also means a somewhat large cast and a lot of switching around. The overall plot is good, with lots of cliffhangers and ingenious plot twists.

It's definitely worth watching, although I don't know if I'd buy a copy for myself. Because of the structure of the show, it's not like you'll be watching individual episodes every so often; it's pretty much a package deal. But I definitely recommend renting it or catching it if FX ever has a season 1 marathon again (they've done it at least twice, showing all 24 episodes back-to-back).

24...

24 was full of completely implausible coincidences and some hit-and-miss acting.

But both of these flaws, plus a few other minor ones, are completely forgivable. The series was, IMHO, a fantastic, entertaining ride that could only get better when seen w/o commercials, and with a couple different endings to choose from. Grab some popcorn :)
