Course I like alignments! :) I love a city that filled withnecromancy and YET isn't evil or perverse! :)
Well, of course you can have pervosity without having alignments. That's rather the point. I'm not a fan of their being a game mechanic that will tell you definitively that something is bad.

My campaign is alignment-free. I don't hate alignments, though, and someday I'll prolly run a campaign that's all about the Good Guys and the Bad Guys. But not Barsoom. Barsoom's all about "How do we know who the bad guys are and what do we do when we need their help?"

Like Joshua Dyal I completely revamped the system (especially magic) for my campaign, though. I don't worry about paladins cause I don't got none. Likewise clerics, barbarians, bards, wizards, druids, sorcerers and um, rangers.

Nothing like gutting a $40 handbook to really make your afternoon holler!

JD: post your campaign PDF when it's ready. Dying to read.

Don't worry, oh DM of the Red Planet (I know, it's just a coincidence.) The first thing I'm going to do when I've got it to a point where it's complete enough to use as just a basic mechanical book is to post a link to it here for comments.

Ironically (or not) much of my magic homebrew was very similar to what you did on your homepage. Since they were already so similar (and yours was very similar to the WoT mechanics as well) I integrated some of your stuff, like the gradual descent into madness of all spellcasters. Eventually.

What I mean is, even WITHOUT an alignment system, MOST everyone thinks of Necromancers as being evil. Now even using an Alignment system, I STILL have the fun and freedom to use non-evil necromancers in a setting that also supports a LE empire that while a little cruel ISN'T seen by it's citizens as being that bad. :)

Speaking as a DM of more than 20 years' experience, I can say without reservation that there simply is no such thing as too many insane spellcasters.

Yay. That sounds like tremendous fun. My party just accepted a job from a society of ghouls. It's a race of undead creatures. They're not evil. I mean, yeah, they EAT CORPSES, and sure, their city has piles of human bones at every street corner, and yes, their rulers are massively powerful vampires, but they're not EVIL. Just really really really creepy.

I've been DMing off and on for about 15 years -- playing for 20. Maybe it's something to do with age? I agree 100%!

Also- I still use tendencies.

LOL! Good ol' tendencies! The easy way to say your character is Evil but not REALLY EVIL!

"I'm basically a good guy! I just do nasty things every now and then." :D
