He tasked me with killing the three leaders, but didn't insist on staying. In fact, he made it clear that if he stayed he'd be unable to resist wolfing-out at the sight of any goblins, so offered to sneak out and leave me to it if I preferred a more stealthy approach.

I didn’t get a “go home you’re free“ dialog choice then, only after I killed them and chose “I killed them” as a dialog choice.

Actually the first thing I did was kill everything but Halsin in the Worg Pens. I thought that would free Halsin, but he refused to leave and told me I had to kill the 3 leaders. I guess the game requires a Halsin or Minthara choice.

You have to choose between Halsin or Minthara. But you can get Halsin to leave without killing Minthara in the Goblin Camp if you pretend to be on her side and get her to bring the goblins to the Druid Grove. Halsin will leave the prison and you can go rescue the Tieflings from Minthara.

I'm in the shadowdark. I just joined the Harpers in killing the Drider. Is there something I should be doing besides following them straight to Moonrise?

You should go to the Last Light Inn as well as exploring the eastern half of the map.

Odd. There certainly should be a "go home I didn't want a bear turning everything hostile" dialogue option as soon as you rescue him, and when you talk to him as a bear.

There's a big quest for Halsin in the area, which can be a little hard to trigger. Make sure to talk to him thoroughly in camp, then you can pick up a lead at Last Light Inn.

I just got to the Lower City and it's intimidatingly dense. It's like "okay, there are at least a dozen named characters within line of sight at any one time. Do I talk to them all, do I breeze on by and risk missing an interesting side quest, should I walk into this building, what about this one?" Feels like swimming through syrup.

Yeah, I did. I thought it was worse because my laptop performance really dragged.

The performance in the lower city is certainly an issue. I felt it was a mistake when the said they where making it contiguous. But it contains some of the best content in the game. My advice is get over your Fear Of Missing Out, if you haven't already done so. Focus on your clear objectives. Yes, there are lots of fun-but-irrelevant little details, but you don't need to see them all.
