BIG DAMN HEROES - a d20 Firefly Campaign [OOC]

I figure Cash probably has been off-world for a year or so, and has hooked up with some of the crew of the ship that pulled him off of Three Hills.

Maybe Melara, Baxter, and Cash all worked on the ship that Kai wins, and want to keep on crewin' her?

The ShipThe second is the Kwai Su Nyao (Swift Ox).

I vote for the Swift Ox. I mean, I love the Firefly class, but we are not the crew of Serenity. And although this is a "Firefly" game, I think we need to be able to distinguish ourselves from the show somewhat.

The Captain
Looking over the characters, the only one who was obviously designed to fill a leadership role is Kai Nielsen. Barring any serious objections, we'll just name him captain and move on to other matters.

I have no problem with this.

The Crew
2) Kai's Crew. It's possible that some others will already be acquainted with Kai and come with him. What he and they have been doing up to this point is an open question, but they may have been crewing another ship together. Or whatever.

After reading through Kai's background, it is quite possible that he and Win fought together at some point in time. I think it would work well if the two of them had worked together since the War. It also makes sense that he would bring someone with him he could trust, especially if some of the old crew has decided to stay on with the ship.

mutter mutter lost my post mutter mutter ...

I vote Ox as well. Its kind of cool in an ugly way. And I like ugly. The Swan is ugly as well.

I'm leaning towards have Helsinki in the Ships crew. Been there a year or so, got a few things on the go down in the workshop (and no where else to put them). So she decides to hang around and see what the new owner is like, and has in mind.

Win and Kai could have served together... and have stuck together since then.

It'd be better from a captain who has just picked up a ship to get a new pilot or bring one of his own along. Perhaps Melara is with Win and Kai.

For a ship... the Ox works

Agh...gotta make this short, it's not easy for me to login from work just now.

Melara has worked the Rim for awhile now, mostly for pretty shady operators. While she's got no "problem" with crime, she's definitely looking to work for someone she can put more trust in than your average black market smuggler, or pirate.

She'd more likely come with the ship or come seeking employment, since no one else seems to have the same criminal background as she does. Or she could have met one or more other crew members after she started hiring out. Lots of possibilities...

I vote for the Ox too, and I happy for Bastian to be renting a semi-permanent states room, regarding Bastian being a Dilettante, I just want to make it clear that Bastian is no dandy, and has no problem travelling 'rough', while he is a widely recognisable 'performance artist', he doesn't have an entourage that follows him around and fawns all over him.

What level of technology is available, I'm wondering if there is such a thing as a holographic camera, obviously I don't expect there to be AI holographic characters, but it would be nice if there was a camera that instead of taking a two dimensional pictures was capable of taking 3-D pictures. If the answer is no then Bastian will stick with a combo digital camera/recorder.

Also I have posted Bastian in the RG.

By my count, we have four votes for the Ox. Simple majority rules, and the Ox it is.

Holographic projection is both cheap and ubiquitous - in Shindig, the balls on the pool table in the dive bar are holographic projections. As for the recording technology, to my knowledge, it's never shown. The only evidence of personal photography I can recall is Mal watching a movie he'd taken of Inarra - I think it was in the movie. In any case, it wasn't 3D.

Let's say that while the projection technology is cheap enough to be ubiquitous, the recording equipment is bulky, expensive, and requires a certain degree of expertise.

Unless anyone remembers differently...

FYI: I have an all-day event tomorrow and will be out of commission for the better part of the day.

The video is on a flat sheet which comes out of what seems to be a scroll (it is however a stiff sheet). It is reminiscent of the electronic paper that is coming out, although in a much more advanced video style.

The projection equipment is probably cheap, although you don't see it in use very often (except in pool tables) or in the movie where they watch the recording on Miranda which seems to be a holographic projection as well. Flat screens are much more prevalent.

Regarding the taking of 3D images, I imagine it wouldn't be so incredibly bulky but would require multiple camera units to provide such an image, otherwise you won't get proper perspectives and well... 3-dimensionality. Thus it could be expensive and would probably require a processing unit that combines the various angles taken.

I think Jon may be a accidental crew member. He was hired cheap at a popular crossroads to improve the wiring on the boat, which hadn't been updated since the ship was made. While working in the bowels of the ship, the crew had to get off world and he got stuck. I'm thinking he may have developed a friendship with a crew member and decided to stay if they'd have him after some harrowing adventure. Let me know if anyone is interested in being pals with a charming ex-Alliance communications officer.

If Jon is ex-Alliance, I suspect he won't be the most popular guy in town. I've never seen the show, so I don't have any strong feelings either way on the Alliance and the brownshirts(?). I might play Helsinki that way. Helsinki is likely to feel for Jon, kind of stuck in a tough place. Helsinki will be his pal. Unless he is a jerk.

If they are both part of the ex-crew, then they will have had some time to get to know each other.

With holographic images, why not amek the image quality dependent on the number and quality of the camera. A simple trio of small cameras will only get you a very rough image. Hi res images require a half dozen or more cameras and like the news teams use.
