biking to work?

My one thought on biking to work is this: Obey the traffic laws.

Three times in the past month, I have been nearly run down by bicyclists who ran red lights while I was crossing the street. One today started yelling at a little old lady who was crossing with the walk signal.

The next one who defies the law in my sight like that is apt to get a copy of the Metro in the face. Or I'm just gonna let them run over my foot - minimal damage to me, but apt to ruin their day.

Some cyclists like to think they're invincible, and that the traffic laws for cars don't apply to them (in Illinois they absolutely DO apply equally). This usually results in dead cyclists.

I almost always stop for red lights (11pm on a weekday after looking both ways being an exception), and roll very slowly through stop signs (as losing all momentum is a pain on a bike). I just wish Chicago taxis had the same level of law-abiding...

Be careful out there.
