Blind swordsman?

Take Blind-Fighting (obviously).
Take Scent (DMG) if your DM allows it.
Take Blindsight, 5 ft (S&F) if your Wisdom is high enough (19+, IIRC).

Re

Zatoichi, the ultimate blind swordsman.

Blindfighting, Blindsight 5-foot radius.

Your class progression should be monk, followed by fighter and perhaps a little rogue thrown in.

If your DM plays monks by Oriental Adventures rules, then you should have an easier time multi-classing.

You can honestly go without the monk, but it seems like such a fitting class for a blindswordsman.

You cannot however survive without the Uncanny Dodge abilty. Uncanny dodge is the class ability that allows you to react to dangers even if you are unaware of those dangers. You must have it or you will be flat-footed whenever attacked with ranged attacks of any kind whether arrows or spells.

As long as you take Blindfighting and have Uncanny Dodge, you should be ok as long as the rest of the party doesn't mind leading you around.

This is my conversion of Icar, the blind fighter from A2. I hadn'e thought of the 1 level of monk, that would help this guy out a bit.

Icar Level 7 Fighter
CR 7, HD 7d10+14, HP 60; Init +3; Spd 20 ft, AC 17 (+7 Half Plate);
Atks +12/+10 melee (2d6+7, 19-20, +1 Greatsword),
SV Fort +7, Ref +5, Will +8; Str 17, Dex 16, Con 15, Int 12, Wis 19, Cha 14;
skills: Listen +19, Intuit Direction +9, Intimidate +7, Climb +9 (-7 check penalty), Craft (Wood Carving) +2, Jump +4 (-7 check penalty), Swim +4, Diplomacy +2.5
Feats: Blind-Fight, Skill Knack(Listen), Cosmopolitan (Listen), Dodge, Iron Will, Weapon Focus(Greatsword), Blindsight 5-foot radius, Weapon Specialization (Greatsword)
Languages: Common, Goblin
Note: he has a Ring of Elemental Fire Resistance Major, Cosmpolitan can be found in the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting and Blindsight 5-foot radius can be found in Sword and Fist,

SKill Knack is found in the NBoF and also in Utlimate Feats. It gives you a +3 bonus to a skill(provided that you have some sort of special qualification, in this case being blind).

In which storyhour was that blind barbarian berserker? The group always just sent him ahead into melee and he killed everything that he heard around him... ;)

Blindswordsman PrC

There was a thread on this a few months ago, and several of us eventually peiced this together. In fact, I play tested it with a Samurai/Monk build. I started out at a high enough level to be level 2 in this PrC at CharGen, so I've not playtested getting into the class, but it seeme dto be very balanced for all ten levels versus the other PCs who took WotC/AEG PrCs from OA and Rokugan.

And yes, Zaitoichi was a big inspiration!

Blind Swordsman

[fluff forthcoming]

Hit Die: d8

A Blind Swordsman's class skills and the relevant ability modifier
are: Balance (Dex), Bluff (Cha), Climb (Str), Concentration (Wis),
Iaijutsu Focus* (Cha), Jump (Str), Swim (Str), Listen (Wis), and
Sense Motive (Wis).

Skill points per level: 6 + Int modifier.

* from Oriental Adventures and only appropriate in that setting.

BAB: +4.
Feats: Blindsight, 5-foot Radius, Skill Focus (Listen).
Listen: 6 ranks.
Sense Motive: 3 ranks.
Special: Must be permanently blind for at least 2 years.

Level BAB Fort Ref Will Special
1 +1 +0 +2 +0 Superior Hearing
2 +2 +0 +3 +0 Uncanny dodge (Dex bonus to AC)
3 +3 +1 +3 +1 Improved Blindsight
4 +4 +1 +4 +1 Distant Ear
5 +5 +1 +4 +1
6 +6 +2 +5 +2 Uncanny dodge (can't be flanked)
7 +7 +2 +5 +2 Superior Blindsight
8 +8 +2 +6 +2 Ethereal Ear
9 +9 +3 +6 +3 Ultra Hearing
10 +10 +3 +7 +3 Uncanny dodge (+1 against traps), Vibrant Ear

Permanently Blind: By some twist of fate, cure of the gods, or near fatal physical malady, the character has lost the power of sight and shall never regain it. Over two years (and with the blindsight feat) the blind swordsman has become accustom to his condition and no longer suffers the listed penalties for being blind. All objects within 5ft are perceived and accounted for. As a side effect of this condition, the character is no longer affected by invisible opponents or by gaze attacks. If the character is deafened or within a silenced area, he looses his positive Dex bonus to AC (if any), and grants all opponents a +2 to attack him. He also must move at half speed, but can still perceive objects around him with the use of blindsight.

Superior Hearing: A blind swordsman receives a +5 bonus to all Listen checks and is always considered to be taking 10 on all Listen rolls. This bonus increases by an additional +2 per level taken in blind swordsman.

Uncanny Dodge: (as you see this ability normally written)

Improved Blindsight: As Blindsight, but with a 20 foot radius.

Distant Ear: The Blind Swordsman hears all sounds within 50 feet as though they were five feet away.

Superior Blindsight: As Blindsight but with a 50 foot radius

Ethereal Ear: The blind swordsman may now perceive objects in the ethereal and make listen checks even while in a silenced area.

Ultra Hearing: The blind swordsman hears all sounds within his maximum hearing range as though they were within 5 ft.

Vibrant Ear: The Blind Swordsman is immune to deafness.
