My wife and I both attended this in 2005 (we live in Southern California) and it was a lot of fun. It's not cheap, especially if you're staying in a hotel nearby, but I can definitely say you'll enjoy the experience.

And given that WoW Model Viewer shows multiple colors of Murky, I'd expect one of the goodies in the swag bag this year will be a red or yellow murloc baby (Murky from Blizzcon 2005 is blue).

What exactly do you do at these cons?

Same thing you do at GenCon. You go to panels, you buy stuff, you have a costume show (with prizes) and compete in tournaments.

In 2005, there were Starcraft, Warcraft and WoW PVP tournaments. This time will certainly be the same, plus the addition of WoW CCG tournaments.

With the demise of E3, this is also where Blizzard will announce new games, probably including the next WoW expansion, and preview them as well.

Last time, they also had a lot of discussion panels with the developers about WoW, including some extremely narrowly focused ones. If you want to see them all in detail, I can link to my write-ups from my guild site in 2005.

Murky, for those who don't know, is a non-combat pet, a blue baby murloc who does the Looney Tunes frog song and dance as an idol animation.

Murky, along with a Burning Crusade beta invite, a T-shirt, keychains and other stuff, was in last time's swag bag. People were able to sell their Murkys on eBay for more than it cost to attend Blizzcon for California residents.

I live in Southern California, and while I wanted to go to BlizzCon, the $100 price tag was--and is--absolutely ridiculous. Unless they cut the price by at least half, I won't be going this year either.

Two days at GenCon SoCal would cost $70. Last BlizzCon's swag bag was easily worth more than $30, even if you didn't go the eBay route with it.
