Blood and Guts: Feedback

Sorry if this has already been addressed but how does one do character generation using Blood and Guts? Do you start off as one of the classes in D20 Modern (i.e. Fast Hero) , take a starting occupation then chose an MOS? Would really appreciate it if someone can outline the steps needed for me . :)

If you have the active duty allegiance, or reserve duty allegiance, which means that you are a member of the armed forces, you may take any advanced training feat, which includes an MOS, any time you are allowed a bonus feat selection by your class.

So most characters will wait until second level to take an MOS, representing their completion of advanced individual training.

Other than that, the process is the same.

I just picked it up the other day.

While reading the first couple of pages, I noticed a number of "nit pick" errors, that are somewhat annoying (Marines not having administrative personnel, annoying for this former 0121), but thus far, I haven't really seen any that are game breakers.

Sure, I have a problem with the way senior enlisted personnel promotions are handled (you must go from say Master Sergeant to First Sergeant before going on to E-9 - not how it really works) but one quick change (getting rid of that) and it works. Oh well, I've seen similar errors in other military games.

But like I said, haven't really seen anything that would be critical to the game or easily modified for someone who disagrees with some of the flavor.

Hey enrious :)

LTNS bud :)

There were some things I felt I had to compromise reality for the function of the game on, and the promotions was one of those places. Its very hard to represent in a game the intricacies of Brevet rank, massive jumps in rank such as Doolittle's promotion from Lt. Colonel to Major General (as I recall) and other things.

I decided moving from rank to rank worked best for a game, as PCs tend to rise in rank at a fairly brisk pace anyway.

In some ways a game is never going to capture life- some of them a lot bigger than rank (the combat system anyone?) :)

Don't be a stranger man :)

Thanks but what I am asking is do i take levels in say strong hero etc then take a starting occcupation then take and MOS? I was hoping someone could take me through step by step? :(

Its not that different. You'd take levels in the basic class of your choice. Your occupation would be military. At the cost of a feat you would take an MOS.

Oh, I can understand that. My objection is requiring promotion from Master Sergeant to First Sergeant (as an example). While I suppose that technically one does outrank the other, in real life they represent people with different jobs (MOS). As an example, if you're an E-8 in supply or administration, then you're a Master Sergeant. If you're in the infantry or artillery, you're a First Sergeant. Master Sergeants aren't required to become First Sergeants because that would entail a change in job/MOS, which is rare by that rank.

But as I said, I don't see any big problem with dropping the "plus" ranks from enlisted personnel.

Yes, I probably have just as many nitpicks as everyone else. However, I've yet to find a game-breaker.
