In a strange turn of events, Golem has been announced as the winner of the 2004 Shared Pieces Design Competition sponsored by About.Com and Abstract Games Magazine. The official announcement can be found here.
Golem is a two-player strategy game involving bidding and resource allocation, designed by yours truly. You may have seen mention of it in my Friday Five last week.
I say "strange" because I had read a post on a forum in May, indicating that the finalists had likely already been notified. (That'll learn me to believe what I read on the internet.) Sounded reasonable to me. So, I set about completing the game design to e-publish it myself, through Blue Devil Games. I even contracted for some artwork and sent it out to playtesters. I was about two weeks away from releasing it, when I got the announcement today.
One of the "prizes" is having the game "shopped" to various publishers. So it looks like BDG will be holding off to see if it is picked up by another publisher for wider distribution.
