Pretty self explanitory... Please give me your thoughts on this PrC from the Minis handbook... as I have a player who is very interested in it as his next character.

thanks...

I've got a PC playing a Bonded Fire Summoner in one of my games. He's enjoying it a lot, and as a DM, I'm not really having any trouble with him. I think he's having a bit of trouble being a little farther behind spellcasting wise, but its definatly a good trade off for the elemental companion...which has helped him out a lot.

I am having a little trouble with this PrC... currently the player in question, is a Wis3/BS5/Sum2. And walking around with a huge Earth Elemental. The player and I are thinking that he, with his companion, could take any of the rest of the party... that he is more powerful then the rest. None of the other guys have noted their displeasure about this yet... mind, they are all fairly new.

I was considering stepping the level of the elemental companion down one level... does this seem to much of a nerf in your mind?

this is what I was considering:

1st Elemental companion (Small)
2nd
3rd Elemental companion (Medium)
4th
5th Elemental companion (Large)
6th
7th Elemental companion (Huge)
8th
9th Elemental companion (Greater)
10th
thoughts??

Hmm... the elemental companion is a bit stronger than the druids animal companion, i.e. at 10th level you get a CR 7 huge elemental compared to a CR 5 dire lion, for example.

However, the summoner loses FIVE levels of spellcasting ability, which is a huge drawback.

A druid also can summon a huge elemental one level later (11th).

I think it's fine as is, but if you think you have to tone down the companion, I'd probably add in one spellcasting level to compensate (or at least change it from 2,4,6,8,10 to 1,3,5,7,9).

P.S. What class is "Sum" and where is it from ?

Summoner PrC from Ultimate Prestige Class (Mongoose #9001) also in Relics and Rituals.

Note for history books: Thanee and I agree on something.

If you are going to take away HALF of a casters spellcasting progression, you had better pay it back in spades. I sort of think that the classes in Book of Eldritch Might (which some detractors, for reasons unknown, think of as "overpowered) are a bit weak for this reason.

Summoner from R&R / Ultimate PrCs, maybe?

It's really empasized by the fact that the Elemental's jump from large to huge is out of line WRT the rest... +8 HD instead of +4.

The other thing I was considering was adding a new elemental in between large and huge, as a 12HD monster. Then the PrC would get this "extra large" elemental at 5th, huge at 7th, and greater at 9th. The elder elemental will have to wait for EPIC progression.

thoughts?

Ah, c'mon, it's surely not that bad... :D

mike, maybe it's only a very temporary effect you are observeing there now at 10th level, which will go away after 1-2 levels, anyways, without change?
